By Fiona Alice Hickie. By Fiona Alice Hickie. Arranged by Fiona Alice Hickie. 21st Century,Chamber,Classical,Latin. 17 pages. Fiona Alice Hickie #1001228. Published by Fiona Alice Hickie (A0.1419806).

A piece for brass quintet based on the poem by the same name. It is a slow piece is a South American style.
Based on the poem: Lyrics: 1. My roots once clung to the earth, The wind is calm the river still. As if nothing else survives. My world is empty, am I alive? From my limbs a fruit was plucked, Within its sheath my heart was tucked. Its seeds contained my unknown future, Inside a flesh so sweet and pure.
2. Would my seeds find a place to fall? Nice fertile ground so they'd grow tall. Or would they find some barren ground. Where no love or nurture can be found? Without the fruit my limbs were bare. An old tree nearby just stood and stared. Why should it stop and help the tree Who let its fruit be taken from thee.
3. About the charmer who took the fruit? Should he help to make them grow? Instead he walked right off the land. With barely a wave of his hand. He bit the apple as he walked away. Enjoying its flesh but did not stay. No care at all for the damage heā€™d done He took the heart from his loved one.
4. So grow another fruit you say. And yes that would be the logical way. But some trees grow abundant fruit. Small and nice without dispute. Others instead grow one to perfection. Round and sweet, on close inspection. But once itā€™s gone then that is all. Then no more shall ever fall.
5. I sit here on the barren hill, The wind is calm the river still. As if nothing else survives. The world is empty no soul survives.
Dedicated to Ben van den Akker.

SKU: A0.811250

Composed by Edward Elgar. Arranged by Mark LaFratta. 20th Century,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 69 pages. Gordon Cherry #6535131. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.811250).

The Severn Suite (Op.87) was composed by Elgar when he was 73 as a test piece for the 1930 British National Brass Band Championships. Elgar dedicated it to his friend, the author, and critic George Bernard Shaw. Some critics consider the Severn Suite to be Elgarā€™s best work in his later years, arguing that is a neglected masterpiece. The work is very Elgarian in the high Romantic style. It is fine music originally composed for brass by a famous acknowledged master that will be enjoyable for players and audiences alike.

The duration of the full piece is around 16:30 and includes five movements, that follow each other without breaks: 1) Introduction (Worcester Castle) ā€“ Pomposo (2:10), 2) Toccata (the Tournament Grounds) - Allegro molto (4:20), 3) Fugue (The Cathedral) ā€“ Andante (3:00), 4) Minuet (in the Commandery) (5:00) ā€“ Moderato, and 5) Coda - Lento ā€“ Pomposo (2:00). The River Severn runs through the center of Worcester, England where Elgar spent his childhood and again lived in later life.

This work beautifully arranged by Mark LaFratta for standard brass quintet (2 Trumpets in B-flat, Horn, Trombone in bass clef and Tuba) is appropriate for advanced performers and may be performed by all conical instruments as well (Cornets, Horn, Euphonium, and Tuba).

Rounding out the “American Trails” with the fifth composition in the collection, “Trail of Tears” is in reference to the heart-wrenching dark history of over 60,000 American Indians being expelled from their lands.  During the period between 1830 and 1850, natives from five tribes were forcibly displaced from their homelands in what later became known as the American Deep South.  These “Five Civilized Tribes” included the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Muscogee, and Seminole nations.  Under the leadership of President Andrew Jackson, Congress passed the “Indian Removal Act” in 1830 which revoked all land ownership from all Native Americans in the Southeast.  Although Jackson was not the originator of the movement to remove the Indians, it was his top legislative priority upon taking office.  In his mind, they were a primary obstacle for the fulfillment of the Manifest Destiny and American national success.  There were many opponents to the violent legislation, such as David Crockett of Tennessee and Catherine Beecher.

The most brutal year of the Trail of Tears occurred in 1838 among the Cherokee who had resisted the Treaty of New Echota of 1836 through petitions and pleas to the US government.  Despite their efforts, the expulsive treaty was ratified and the resistant Cherokee were compelled by militia to vacate all lands east of the Mississippi River.  The heaviest death tolls occurred in the summer and winter months of 1838 after the deadline to depart had passed in May.  Disease, exposure, starvation, and harassment by frontiersman compounded the physical exertion of the “death marches” that killed many.

This composition extensively borrows the four-note motif from Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5.  That symphony was composed in the early 1800s in Europe at the same time as the growth of the anti-Indian sentiment across the American frontier.  Rather than primary thematic material, “Trail of Tears” uses the motif as a morose, plodding accompanimental pattern that adds depth of sorrow to the musical homage.

Composed by Joseph Lamb. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. 20th Century,Classical,Historic,Ragtime. 32 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #984793. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1401614).

Ragtime was originally and primarily piano music.Ā  The Library of Congress traces the origin and wellspring of ragtime to St. Louis, Missouri. Ā The Britannica website explains, ā€œRagtime evolved in the playing of honky-tonk pianists along the Mississippi and Missouri rivers in the last decades of the 19th century. It was influenced by minstrel-show songs, African American banjo styles, and syncopated (off-beat) dance rhythms of the cakewalk, and also elements of European music.ā€
Ā Ā Ā Ā  But it wasnā€™t until the mid-1890s, when music publishers started printing ragtime scores, making the music available to the public at large, that ragtimeā€™s popularity began to soar. Ā By 1900 ragtime was the popular music. Ā It stayed that way until about 1917 when the rise of jazz began to overtake it. Ā By 1920, ragtime was nearly forgotten.
Ā Ā Ā Ā  Thirty years later, a ragtime revival began. Ā And one Patricia Lamb-Conn found out that her father, Joseph F. Lamb, was a well-known composer of ragtime. Ā In fact, the ā€œBig Threeā€ composers of classical ragtime are considered to be Scott Joplin, James Scott and the only non-African American, Joseph Lamb.
Ā Ā Ā Ā  Lamb was born in 1887 in New Jersey, taught himself to play piano and was very much influenced by Joplinā€™s early ragtime publications. Ā From there, Lamb went on to develop into a master of classic ragtime.
Ā Ā Ā Ā  One of Lambā€™s most popular works was a 1916 composition he titled ā€œPatricia Rag.ā€ (The title apparently had nothing to do with his daughter, who was born in 1924.) Ā It consists of four themes in five sections, with the first theme repeated after sections 1 and 2. Ā Lamb pitched the opening in E-flat Major, changing to A-flat Major at the Trio. Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā  This brass quintet arrangement, completed in 2024, consists of 150 measures, approximately five minutes, ten seconds in length. Ā It retains the basic structure of the original piano score but modifies the pitches to B-flat Major and E-flat Major, respectively, to accommodate the normal playing range of the brass instruments. Ā Possible exceptions for some players include: Ā (1) Trumpet 1 plays its A-above-the-staff a number of times and its B above-the-staff once; (2) Trombone plays several E above-the-staff notes; (3) Tuba plays several way-below-the-staff F notes and one high G note. Throughout the arrangement, the original melody is maintained and featured, but in some sections the background and harmony are altered to feature one or more of the five instruments. Ā In the Trio, the sections designated by rehearsal marks F and G are slowed and treated as a serenade; the original tempo is restored at H. Ā In performing this arrangement, players should pay particular attention to dynamics. Ā Additionally, because of the nature of ragtime, this piece may require more-than-usual practice and rehearsal.
Ā Ā Ā Ā  The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge. Ā He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms. Ā Contact him at lessmith61@bellsouth.net. Ā For more arrangements by Les, enter Sweetwater Brass Press (without the quotation marks) in the Sheet Music Plus or Sheet Music Direct search box.

Roger Bobo remembers listening to the Dizzy Trio performing traditional American Folk tunes such as Turkey in the Straw and Way Down Upon the Swanee River as a child. He found the old recording and composed a fun arrangement for Brass Quintet.  You and your audiences will split your sides laughing at these old corny melodies.  For moderately advanced performers.
