This easy arrangement for brass quintet was adapted to be simple to perform and understand the structure of the original work for various levels of musical knowledge. It can be played freely by beginning students due to the ease imposed on the piece; however, this does not preclude it from being played by professionals and music teachers. It is also ideal for academic recitals, weddings, student method and ceremonies that are arranged in the same way as the piece contains. The Cantata 156 (BWV 156) was written for the third Sunday after Epiphany in 1729, and was first performed on January 23 of that year. The text is by Picander, one of Bach's favorite librettists. of the four cantatas written by Bach for the feast, it was the last and only one scored for solo voice. This is a choral cantata, employing a choral melody in several movements. Cantata 156, in fact, employs two different choral melodies and texts in the second and sixth movements. A cantata is a sung symphony consisting of several parts, one of which is the Arioso, which is the initial instrumental part.

Jesus Loves Me is one of the most well known and beloved hymns in the Christian faith.  This is a hymn that we all learned at a very early age, perhaps in Sunday School, Bible School or Junior Church.  It has been with us since 1862.  The lyrics were originally written in 1860 as a poem by Anna B. Warner.  Then in 1862, the poem was put to music by William Bradbury.  This beautiful hymn has withstood the test of time like Amazing Grace, The Old Rugged Cross and so many more.This arrangement is written for Brass Quintet and has three verses and choruses.  The first version closely follows the original harmonic structure without any deviations.  The second version utilizes a different harmonic sequence and includes some rhymic changes in a few spots.  Finally, the third version again includes a different harmonic sequence, modulates to a different key and contains an extended ending.  This wonderful piece can be played as special music for your church service, or offertory.

This makes it an ideal arrangement for Christmas Day. The third verse allows the sopranos to sing a new and fresh descant while the congregation and ATB members of the choir sing in unison, accompanied by the organ and 1st trumpet.  A short two-bar link passage allows the music to modulate up a key to A flat major. Key: Eb major.Watts was an English 17th/18th Century shoolmaster, minister, and hymnist. Lowell was a 19th Century hymnis from Massachusettes. This hymn was based on a Gregaoria chant called Hamburg. Section A exposits the hymn. Section B goes into a minor key with a legubrious and funereal feeling. The first trumpet adds a phrase that is almost like a waling quality. Section B then ends on a picrady third followed by an Italian augmented sixth chord. Section C is now the newly modulated major key with a descant by yours truly added.

It consists of the well known melody passed around by the trombone and horn in the key of Eb concert, followed by a chorus of a new countermelody traded back and forth by the trumpets in F All this is followed in the third chorus by a modulation to G major and having both melodies played together for the final climax. A quick tempo is required to bring out the snappy feeling of this arrangement!

This 3-movement brass quintet is program music, in that it is written in the style usually used to depict the American West, and frequently has the instruments taking on the speaking roles of cowboys or other western characters.  The first movement has a group of cowboys sitting around a campfire telling tall tales (at least this is what I had in mind).  In the second movement ranchers (or farmers) are waiting desperately for rain, which comes only briefly.  The third movement involves rival families, a surprise wedding, and a square dance.  Silly, maybe, but it helped me write the music, which is fun to play.  Suitable for advanced intermediate and professional quintets.  Duration: 11 minutes, 11 seconds.
