Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1158143 Composed by Dr. Daniel N. Thrower. 20th Century,Chamber,Classical,Patriotic. 48 pages. Https://gildedmusicpress.com/ #758448. Published by https://gildedmusicpress.com/ (A0.1158143). The brief but picturesque title provides ample explanation for the intended imagery. The words “awe, wonder, majesty, inspiration, and contemplation†drove the musical strains of “Rushmore Trail.†The piece begins serenely (albeit with complex counterpoint throughout the brass parts), and the percussion part is needed to enhance the melodic line. The rest of the piece is full of fun, excitement, complexity, patriotism, and a variety of emotional play as the thematic content is presented and transformed in different ways. The overall feel is fulfillment of the American patriot’s dream to finally walk the trails and experience the grandeur of Mount Rushmore in person, shared with loved ones.

Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1158390 Composed by Dr. Daniel N. Thrower. 20th Century,Chamber,Classical,Contemporary,Historic. 34 pages. Https://gildedmusicpress.com/ #758671. Published by https://gildedmusicpress.com/ (A0.1158390). “Pony Express Trail†is the fourth substantial composition in a masterful series of “American Trails†for brass quintet. This piece commemorates the 160th year of the astounding system of stations and riders that was ingeniously devised to quickly deliver mail and other communications from America’s Missouri River frontier to the rapidly growing western territories. The music in this 4½-minute work is rambunctious, rhythmically unpredictable, and yet extremely exciting and listenable to the average audience member. The use of three woodblocks as the only percussion allude strongly to the clopping whirl of horses’ hooves, though not in a rhythmically mimicking manner. The opening motifs immediately develop into a manic ride across the Wild West, and lay the groundwork for all melodic content. These simple motifs smack of cowboy music, subtly borrowed from the movie theme to “Magnificent Seven†composed by Elmer Bernstein. Other influences for this piece include Aaron Copland’s harmonies and wide intervals, and the virtuosic brass band cornet writing of Gustav Holst and Malcolm Arnold. In the style of an operatic three-part overture, the middle slow section memorializes the tragic loss of 16 lives during the Paiute war in the summer of 1860. Being a rider or a station attendant for the Pony Express was perilous on any leg of the trail, but especially during that time in the Nevada Territory. In a very real way, all these men were iconic heroes of the American West.

Brass Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.767334 Composed by Giuseppe Verdi. Arranged by Mike Lyons. Romantic Period. Score and parts. 38 pages. Lyons Music Services #3502033. Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767334). This famous aria from La Traviata translates very well onto brass. I suppose there's an affinity between brass players and drinking songs! This is certainly a rousing example. The melody is shared between the 1st Trumpet, Horn and Trombone/Euphonium (Parts 1,3 and 5) as the different singers take their 'verse'. It is great fun to play with lots of excuses for horseplay amongst the players.Parts are supplied as follows:Part 1 in Bb - Trumpet/CornetPart 2 in Bb - Trumpet/CornetPart 3 in F/Eb - HornPart 4 in C/Bb - Trom./Euph./Barit.Part 5 in C/Eb - Tuba/Eb Bassthe pdf includes an extra part 4 in bass clef, without the change to tenor clef.

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1490412 Composed by Traditional. Arranged by BRIAN W. COPPING. Contest,Festival,Folk,Historic,Traditional. 33 pages. EMK Music #1067254. Published by EMK Music (A0.1490412). Scored for 2 Trumpets (Bb Cornet/Flugel Horn), Horn in F, Trombone/Euphonium and Bass. There are Alternative Parts for Eb and Bb Horn, and, Bb Trombone, Bb Euphonium, and Eb and Bb Basses all in Treble and Bass Clefs. This Medley brings together two well-known Australian tunes with the Queensland version of Waltzing Matilda which, in spite of a catchy melody written by Marie MacPherson, is less well known than the version written by Banjo Patterson and Marie Cowan. Botany Bay was originally heard, under a different name, in both Melbourne and London in the Nineteenth Century as part of a Burlesque Musical, and Click Goes the Shears reflects the importance of the wool industry in Australia. The contrasting time signatures and tempos are, in some way, symbolic of the enormous variety found in this vast continent.

Published by https://gildedmusicpress.com/ (A0.1489523). Dimension Traveler, Op. 150, for brass quintet was completed 26 Mar 2024.  When I wrote the first few distinctive notes into the computer, my ten-year-old son said that it sounded “futuristic.”  Somehow that sparked memories of a novel I had started years ago, titled “Dimension Traveler,” based on dimensional theories I had developed.  With that fresh inspiration in mind, the piece wrote itself with opening movie credits in mind. The form is thematically palindromic, the center point being m. 77.  The beginning to rehearsal letter A mirrors K to the end; A to B is parallel to J-K; B-C = I-J; C-D = H-I; D-E = G-H; and the central thematic sections E-F = F-G.  Concerning that central turning point, the thematic material shifts from the trumpets’ first statement at letter E to low brass with the trumpets taking on the pointillistic accompaniment at letter F.  Of interest is the parallel of C-D and H-I wherein the motivic material, including dynamics, is quite literally reversed note for note to a climax. For aural aesthetics in performance, there is an optional cut from letter K to m. 142.  Thematically, the structure remains chiastic, but taking the cut simply truncates the end for a motivic flavor rather than repeating the entire opening entrée.  There is nothing wrong with purists performing the work in its entirety—it is simply a matter of taste among the performing ensemble members.Stylistically, this piece strays far from my typical compositions.  Besides the pervasive echoing eighth-note motifs, the key never changes, and there is no chromaticism.  Inspired in that regard by the masterpiece “Quintet” by Michael Kamen, the diatonicism often flows in planed clusters mildly influenced by the choral works of Eric Whitacre.  Another deviation from my well-established compositional habits is the instrumentation including bass trombone instead of tuba.  Of course the part can be played by a tubist, though the bass trombone meshes more seamlessly with the timbres of the other instruments in passing along the pervasively echoing eighth-notes.The individual brass parts appear deceptively simple, and indeed, they are not technically demanding besides a couple high notes in the trumpets.  However, putting this piece together in an ensemble setting is rhythmically treacherous! The four-minute final product indeed sounds like it could be the opening to an epic movie of the same title, based on the novel-in-progress.

Gospel music has infiltrated the New Orleans jazz repertoire since the very early days of jazz. Although gospel songs were traditionally played by jazz bands at funerals or church, it is now common that these songs are also played in secular venues. “Down by the Riverside†is an example of such a song, adapted by jazz musicians to fit the New Orleans jazz or brass band style. It has been a staple in New Orleans jazz since at least the early 1920s. This arrangement for Brass Quintet plus optional Acoustic Bass and Drum Set is written in the style of a New Orleans Brass Band, the kind of tune you might hear at a Second Line Parade or Jazz Funeral. Play this piece with the attitude: Laissez les bons temps rouler ( Let the good times roll ).   Performance Time: Approx. 2 minutes 40 seconds

Rounding out the “American Trails” with the fifth composition in the collection, “Trail of Tears” is in reference to the heart-wrenching dark history of over 60,000 American Indians being expelled from their lands.  During the period between 1830 and 1850, natives from five tribes were forcibly displaced from their homelands in what later became known as the American Deep South.  These “Five Civilized Tribes” included the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Muscogee, and Seminole nations.  Under the leadership of President Andrew Jackson, Congress passed the “Indian Removal Act” in 1830 which revoked all land ownership from all Native Americans in the Southeast.  Although Jackson was not the originator of the movement to remove the Indians, it was his top legislative priority upon taking office.  In his mind, they were a primary obstacle for the fulfillment of the Manifest Destiny and American national success.  There were many opponents to the violent legislation, such as David Crockett of Tennessee and Catherine Beecher. The most brutal year of the Trail of Tears occurred in 1838 among the Cherokee who had resisted the Treaty of New Echota of 1836 through petitions and pleas to the US government.  Despite their efforts, the expulsive treaty was ratified and the resistant Cherokee were compelled by militia to vacate all lands east of the Mississippi River.  The heaviest death tolls occurred in the summer and winter months of 1838 after the deadline to depart had passed in May.  Disease, exposure, starvation, and harassment by frontiersman compounded the physical exertion of the “death marches” that killed many. This composition extensively borrows the four-note motif from Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5.  That symphony was composed in the early 1800s in Europe at the same time as the growth of the anti-Indian sentiment across the American frontier.  Rather than primary thematic material, “Trail of Tears” uses the motif as a morose, plodding accompanimental pattern that adds depth of sorrow to the musical homage.

Gordon Cherry #4988353. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792495). J. S. Bach’s massive work, The Art of Fugue, is a summation of his powers as a composer of contrapuntal music. Each fugue is a masterpiece in its own right. Number Thirteen is a three-voice, mirror fugue that introduces a new form of the original Art of Fugue theme in the Rectus and then turns everything upside down in the Inversus. About 5 minutes in length.
