Composed by John Philip Sousa. Arranged by Matthew Nunes. Chamber,Classical,Historic,March,Patriotic. 26 pages. Matthew Nunes Music #931746. Published by Matthew Nunes Music (A0.1346956).

Written for the organization of the same name, Sousa said the march “…absolutely breathes the boy; it visualizes the supple step of the boy marching, and not the heavy tread of the man.†The unique Second Strain, to be whistled along with the melody, highlights this inspiration.

This Brass Quintet arrangement was made using “The President’s Own†United States Marine Band’s The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa score as found at https://www.marineband.marines.mil/Audio-Resources/The-Complete-Marches-of-John-Philip-Sousa/. The Boy Scouts of America was composed in 1916, and the referenced edition was made Public Domain in 2018. The piece is catalogued as Volume 4, No. 75.

Composed by Percy Aldridge Grainger. Arranged by Ray Thompson. 20th Century,Celtic,Folk,Irish. 9 pages. RayThompsonMusic #852701. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.1259414).

Arranged brass quintet.

Percy Aldridge Grainge
r’s arrangement of the Scottish song The Caledonian Hunt’s Delight became Ye Banks and Braes O' Bonnie Doon.

The river Doon flows gracefully between the Loch Doon and the Firth of Clyde in Stirlingshire, Scotland.
It was inspired by Robert Burns poem, The Banks of Doon, written in 1783.

The piece was originally scored in 1903 for a chorus of women’s unison voices, accompanied by men’s voices, whistlers, and harmonium or organ at will.

This was one of Grainger’s earliest folk-music arrangements, and it was dedicated to his dear friend Sigurd Fornander.

The setting for band was completed in 1932 (British Folk-Music Setting No. 32).

Arranged standard  brass quintet of 2 tpts, hn, tbn and tba (based on the wind band arrangement).

Composed by John Philip Sousa. Arranged by Matthew Nunes. Chamber,Historic,March,Patriotic. 30 pages. Matthew Nunes Music #902614. Published by Matthew Nunes Music (A0.1313891).

Using recycled material as well as Sailor’s Hornpipe, this march was premiered June 25th, 1903 in London’s Albert Hall by a massive group with the royal family in attendance. It features a boatswain’s whistle (or bosun’s whistle or pipe), which I’ve notated in approximate pitches in the Trumpet 1 part. I recommend purchasing an authentic one, as the unique sound is difficult to fake, and the spirit of this march is a distinct naval flavor.

By Floyd Cramer. By Harry Warren and Mack Gordon. Arranged by Peet du Toit. Jazz. 18 pages. Peet du Toit #961811. Published by Peet du Toit (A0.1377195).

Chattanooga Choo Choo is a 1941 song written by Mack Gordon and composed by Harry Warren. It was originally recorded as a big band/swing tune by Glenn Miller and His Orchestra and featured in the 1941 movie Sun Valley Serenade. It was the first song to receive a gold record, presented by RCA Victor in 1942, for sales of 1.2 million copies.
The song opens up with the band, sounding like a train rolling out of the station, complete with the trumpets and trombones imitating a train whistle, before the instrumental portion comes in playing two parts of the main melody. This is followed by the vocal introduction of four lines before the main part of the song is heard.

The main song opens with a dialog between a passenger and a shoeshine boy:

Pardon me, boy, is that the Chattanooga Choo Choo?
Yes, yes, Track 29!
Boy, you can give me a shine.
Can you afford to board the Chattanooga Choo Choo?
I've got my fare, and just a trifle to spare.

The singer describes the train's route, originating from Pennsylvania Station in New York and running through Baltimore to North Carolina before reaching Chattanooga. He mentions a woman he knew from an earlier time in his life, who will be waiting for him at the station and with whom he plans to settle down for good. After the entire song is sung, the band plays two parts of the main melody as an instrumental, with the instruments imitating the WHOO WHOO of the train as the song ends.

Here's my representation thereof with Sam Harrill's nifty percussion score supporting it.

By Pat Metheny. By Pat Metheny. Arranged by Will Corbin. Contemporary,Pop. 25 pages. Will Corbin #1040135. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1461378).

My dad heard this song playing as background music for some TV show. He suggested it as a quintet piece (he liked us mostly because we played some of his favorite Dixieland tunes). The result is, well, at least a little bit weird.
The original haunting Pat Metheny recording was played on electric sitar, with a high-speed snare drum providing train effect. I wanted to achieve the same thing, so the horns take care of it throughout the piece (with tuba providing it from start to finish).
And the song needed a train horn for effect. I wanted to know what chord a train whistle blew, and the Internet told me it was a ninth chord. That's what those weird interruptions are all about.
If you need other instrumentation, I'm happy to provide. Contact me at wilcor@aol.com.
