This work is written for advanced performers at about 4 1/2 minutes in length and will work very well in a recital or concert.

This song is from the 1927 Broadway musical Showboat, music by Jerome Kern and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein (before his more celebrated partnership with Richard Rodgers). It was most famously performed by Paul Robeson in a 1931 film version of the play, (It was remade in 1951 with Ava Gardner playing a mulatta singer in a part that would have gone to Lena Horne had the producers not feared the wrath of Southern moviegoers.) The story includes exposition of the plight of African-Americans in the South of the Gilded Age; as a result, its content (including the lyrics of this song) were altered to accommodate racist audiences. Their original had lots of electronic background stuff going on, plus a load of percussion. What's left without that is a lot of tricky rhythms, since the horns have to carry the rhythmic load. It was nominated for both an Oscar and a Golden Globe for best song, but it lost out to both ... to Under The Sea, from the same movie. It has since appeared on Broadway (2007-8) and in 2023's live-action version of the same movie. It's a lively little piece for brass quintet, with melody chores scattered through the ensemble. It's built on John LaBarbera's down-tempo ballad version for the Buddy Rich big band. Trombonists know this one for two features: a gorgeous but challenging bass 'bone solo, and a tricky but gorgeous 'bone section soli. (which means Who will it be?)(indicating the song was probably about something other than dancing when it began). Norman Gimbel wrote the English lyrics for it a year later (he also anglicized The Girl From Ipanema), and Dean Martin promptly recorded it on an album of the same name. It's more familiar today in its Michael Buble incarnation (from which this arrangement picks up bits and pieces). The song sold a more than a million copies of sheet music and 78rpm records, and sparked rumbamania in the U.S. The National Recording Preservation Board recognizes it as the first American recording of an authentic Latin dance style. It has been covered in recordings something like 160 times, by Stan Kenton, Django Reinhart, Louis Armstrong, Dean Martin and many others.This fairly simple arrangement is for two trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba. It was inspired, he later said, by the then-young daughter of John F. Kennedy. Still later, he said it was actually his wife, Marcia, who provided the muse, but he needed a three-syllable name to fit the music. Whatever. It's an awful song, but audiences love it, in part because it comes with ritual participatory yells and gestures born of many sports stadiums, notably Fenway Park, where it's played in every 8th inning.
