This song, published in 1955 during the warmest part of the Cold War, is a true Soviet anthem and also, after it escaped the Iron Curtain, a modern jazz standard. When composer Vasily Solovyov-Sedoi and his poet-lyrcist partner, Mikhail Matusovsky put the song together, they titled it Leningrad Nights (which today would be the very unpoetic St. Petersburg Nights. For some reason the Soviet Ministry of Culture asked them to rename it, roughly, Evenings In The Moscow Suburbs. Thankfully, the official name didn't stick. The song provided break music for a Soviet music and news station and also for Radio Moscow. I heard it performed by a small band on the steps of the Katerina Palace, the Summer Palace, outside St. Petersburg and was inspired to give it a shot when I got home. And it's the only song from the film you've ever heard of since. It pops up here and there in movies, and was most famously covered by Frank Sinatra.The lyrics were a product of their times. The original featured the line, Franklin Roosevelt's looks give me a thrill. Sinatra substituted James Durante's looks. (This from actual personal experience.) So the heavy melodic lifting in this arrangement goes there. The song was featured in the 1962 latter-day John Wayne adventure romance comedy Hatari, a film from which its theme song is the only thing worth remembering. The song won Mancini a 1963 Grammy for best instrumental song. A 1962 recording by Lawrence Welk (!) reached No. 48 on Billboard's Hot 100. This work is written for advanced performers at about 4 1/2 minutes in length and will work very well in a recital or concert.

It's built on John LaBarbera's down-tempo ballad version for the Buddy Rich big band. Trombonists know this one for two features: a gorgeous but challenging bass 'bone solo, and a tricky but gorgeous 'bone section soli. The story includes exposition of the plight of African-Americans in the South of the Gilded Age; as a result, its content (including the lyrics of this song) were altered to accommodate racist audiences. This is one of them. The Buffalo Bills barbershop quartet (the school board) sings Lida Rose, while Shirley Jones (in the movie) as Marian the Librarian sings Will I Ever Tell You elsewhere in River City. This arrangement is built from a barbershop arrangement found floating on the 'net from a gay men's chorus, with the four higher horns -- two trumpets, horn, trombone -- providing the quartet.
