Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 2 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1461603

Composed by Meredith Willson. Arranged by Will Corbin. Barbershop,Broadway,Film/TV,Musical/Show. 21 pages. Will Corbin #1040346. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1461603).

Meredith Willson's one-man masterpiece, The Music Man, features a couple of counterpoint combinations, where one song shares the chord structure with another and can be played/sung together. This is one of them. The Buffalo Bills barbershop quartet (the school board) sings Lida Rose, while Shirley Jones (in the movie) as Marian the Librarian sings Will I Ever Tell You elsewhere in River City. This arrangement is built from a barbershop arrangement found floating on the 'net from a gay men's chorus, with the four higher horns -- two trumpets, horn, trombone -- providing the quartet. The trombone peels off for the Marian ballad.

Composed by Spencer Williams. Arranged by Will Corbin. Blues,Historic,Jazz. 22 pages. Will Corbin #1037395. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1458413).

Basin Street sits on the edge of the French Quarter of New Orleans. A few years before this song was written, it served as the border of a red-light district known as Storyville. A city councilman named Sidney Story came up with the idea of creating a district to which prostitution would be limited, where it could be watched and regulated. So The District was created in 1897; it soon became known as Storyville, much to the chagrin of Councilman Story. During its 20-year official life, a visitor could buy a blue book for two bits that listed prostitutes alphabetically and by race and address. It was abolished in 1917 during World War I because it violated a rule that no house of prostitution could be within 5 miles of a military base. The Navy wanted its sailors pure of heart. It's also a place where jazz grew up. The bordellos hired musicians to entertain customers, who weren't particularly interested in the music. So the mostly black performers were free to experiment, to try new syncopated rhythms, to blend the sounds of African drums and plantation gospel to come up with what would become known as Dixieland music. Storyville (it would later mostly be razed for public housing, and still later begin to gentrify as property values rose) was where Spencer Williams wrote the song in 1928; Louis Armstrong, who spent some of his childhood nearby, first recorded it in 1928. It has since been recorded by dozens of other artists.

By Carrie Hannah. By Kenny Ascher and Paul Williams. Arranged by Will Corbin. Children,Film/TV. 22 pages. Will Corbin #1041459. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1462712).

Kermit the Frog (his creator, Jim Henson, was behind the curtain) sings this song at the beginning of 1979's The Muppet Movie. It would be nominated for an Oscar for best original song, which subsequent history would indicate it should have won. The honor went to It Goes Like It Goes from the soundtrack of Norma Rae, which hasn't been heard since. The Rainbow Connection, meanwhile, has been covered by just about every singer and group in the universe, just short of the metal rockers. This arrangement is a challenge, although the parts are not technically difficult. I've used stairstep constructions throughout, so a quintet has to be tight and precise to maintain a steady tempo. It ain't easy.
It's scored for two trumpets, horn, baritone and tuba, but there's a trombone part included. If you need other instrumentation, please contact me at wilcor@aol.com.

By Will Corbin. By John Philip Sousa. Arranged by Will Corbin. March. 8 pages. Will Corbin #995830. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1414060).

Manhattan Beach was a New York summer resort popular around the turn of the 18th/19th centuries. Sousa wrote this march (based in part on one he had written 18 years earlier) while performing there in 1893. Now it's a New York City neighborhood of the same name. Things dicovered on the way to learning other things: Sousa dedicated Manhattan Beach to the resort's proprietor, entrpreneur/developer Austin ... Corbin (also big in banking and president of the Long Island Rail Road. Apprently no relation to the arranger. Good thing, too; he was a raging anti-Semite (he wouldn't allow Jews at the resort) and was instrumental in cheating the Montauk native American tribe outy of their land.

By Will Corbin. By Traditional. Arranged by Will Corbin. Christmas,Traditional. 18 pages. Will Corbin #1038400. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1459448).

An 19th century English hymnwriter took a 13th century Easter tune he found in a 16th century Finnish song collection and turned it into a tribute to a legendary 10th century Bohemian nobleman. (Bohemia today is in the Czech Republic.) Turns out Wenceslas, around whom a cult developed in his native land and, inexplicably, in England, wasn't really a king, so Holy Roman Emperor Otto made him an honorary one after his death, since he was sunch a king of a guy.
All that notwithstanding, it's still a pretty good Christmas carol for a brass quintet.

By Will Corbin. By Johann Strauss. Arranged by Will Corbin. March. 11 pages. Will Corbin #995844. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1414074).

Johann Strauss Sr. wrote this catchy celebratory march in 1848, a month after the Count Josef Radetzky won a now long-forgotten victory in the first Italian war for independence from the Austrian Empire; Radetzky had been a leading light of the Austro-Hungarian army throughout the first half of the 19th century. It was an immediate hit, and it remains so in Austria. These days it's kind of an unofficial national anthem that involves audience participation (clapping and stomping in the appropriate loud passages) and is kind of required content in any concert program, frequently as an encore. In the U.S., it's an Oktoberfest standby. My first exposure to Radetzky came when the Stadtmusik Feldkirch, a community band, was kind enough to allow an American ex-pat to join its ranks for the couple of years we lived there. Feldkirch is a lovely medieval town in far western Austria; it borders directly on Liechtenstein. I played the tenorhorn, which is the alias for a baritone or euphonium over there.

The full name is Hard-Hearted Hannah (The Vamp Of Savannah). If you've never heard the lyrics, look 'em up. They're a hoot.
The song was written in 1924 and performed by a number of contemporary singers and bands. Its a favorite of barbershop quartets. Sammy Nestico did a terrific arrangement for big band.
It was even sung by an American Idol contestant. She lost. Badly.
This arrangement is adapted from an old stock Dixieland chart for mixed ensemble.
If you need alternative instrumentation, I'm happy to accommodate. Contact me at wilcor@aol.com.

By Will Corbin. By John Philip Sousa. Arranged by Will Corbin. March. 11 pages. Will Corbin #995853. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1414083).

Sousa wrote this march in 1889 for a Washington, D.C. Masonic lodge. The occasion was ...; wait for it ... the 24th Triennial Conclave of the Grand Encampment. Really. I couldn't make that up. The Thunderer was said to be Sousa's wife's favorite march. It's not known who the thunderer was. Maybe she thought it was her husband. Many thank to the U.S. Marine Corps Band, whose fine Sousa transcriptions make these arrangements a little easier to pull off.

Yes, the title is the name of the newspaper. Its new owners in 1889 wanted to celebrate with a song, so they hired John Philip Sousa, then director of the U.S. Marine Corps Band (The President's Own) to write one for them. The result was The Washington Post March, which became wildly popular (mostly a dance tune to accompany the two-step) in the U.S. and in Europe. It also led to his coronation as The March King. A British journalist so anointed him on the strength of this march (although the reporter probably made him The American March King, since Kenneth J. Alford (Colonel Bogey, etc.) was already The March King in Great Britain. Washington Post debuted in a ceremony on the grounds of the Smithsonian Institution, with President Benjamin Harrison among the throng of attendees.
