Originally composed for organ, it has been arranged for Brass Quartet, Brass Quintet, or Brass Choir with optional keyboard. Two harmonizations of the isometric version of the hymn are also provided. The first is a standard harmonization found in many hymnals. The second is based on the concluding Chorale of Cantata 80 by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). Including the music of both Bach and Pachelbel, this arrangement serves as an excellent introduction to the music of the Baroque era and the contributions of great Lutheran composers. Published by Stephanie Daige (A0.796864). This little fugue is one of Bach's most famous and beloved keyboard works. Re-imagined for brass quintet, it is a challenging and fun setting for this fugue.  The five instruments take turns entering with the subject of the fugue, and interplay back and forth with the other instruments.  The timbres of the different instruments add a whole new textural dimension to this already fascinating work by J.S. Bach. I considered the need to breathe for each of these brass instruments, which obviously wasn’t an issue in the original version intended for organ. This piece would be appropriate for advanced high school students, college students,or professionals. It would do well in a chamber music concert, a church, or between acts of a larger ensemble concert,perhaps in another location of the auditorium while a (quiet!) set change is taking place. It would also work well as prelude or lobby music. The duration is just over three minutes (or longer if you prefer to take it slower). Each measure is numbered individually for convenience during rehearsals.  I hope you will enjoy performing this piece as much as I have enjoyed arranging it! A canon is a polyphonic device in which several voices play the same music, entering in sequence. Pachelbel's Canon, was originally written in the key of D Major and was scored for three violins arranged in canon, accompanied by a basso continuo which repeats the same harmonic progression throughout the entire piece. The common musical term for this is ostinato or ground bass. Regis Bookshar has now arranged this music for a Brass Quintet consisting of three Trumpets and 2 Trombones. The three Trumpets play the melody in canon while the ostinato accompaniment is played by the two Trombones. This arrangement is suitable for high school and college students but could also be performed by professional performers. It is perfect for concerts and church services, especially for Weddings, but could be performed for any occasion. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (30 pages). This version is written in the key of Bb Major, to make it a little easier for some younger performers, but another version is also available in the key of D Major if you would prefer.
