La plus que lente (The more than slow) is a waltz for solo piano written by Claude Debussy in 1910. The piece debuted at the New Carlton Hotel in Paris, where it was transcribed for strings and performed by the popular 'gipsy' violinist, Léoni, for whom Debussy wrote it. Debussy arranged the piece for small orchestra (flute, clarinet, piano, cimbalom and strings) which was published in 1912. This arrangement for brass quintet is challenging and virtuos for all players with an especially rewarding trumpet part.

This is music for music's sake, a small fanfare full of the joy and pleasure that playing in a brass quintet brings with it.   It was written while Mr. Francis was a student in Montreal, and derives its thematic material from the well-known Quebec folk song V'la l'bon vent,  a tune which is sung in a variety of forms in virtually every region of the province.   Nick thinks that at the time he must have had in mind the magnificent brass fanfares of Montreal composer Jacques Hétu,  for the title is certain to put one in mind of his Petite Fanfare pour Lanaudière.  Here is two-and-a-half minutes of joyous music-making that oughtn't need any further excuses!

Drunken Sailor (letteralmente: Marinaio ubriaco) è un canto marinaresco, conosciuto anche come What Shall We Do with a/the Drunken Sailor? (letteralmente: Cosa faremo con un/il marinaio ubriaco?).

Questo canto di lavoro nacque per accompagnare certi lavori a bordo di velieri, specialmente quelli che richiedevano un passo svelto e vivace. Si pensa che il canto risalga ai primi del XIX secolo o anche prima, in un periodo nel quale le ciurme delle barche, specialmente quelle dei vascelli militari, erano sufficientemente numerose da poter tirare una corda semplicemente marciando lungo il ponte. Con l'avvento delle navi postali e i clipper e le loro ciurme ridotte, che richiedevano differenti metodi di lavoro, l'uso di questo canto è progressivamente scemato o è passato all'accompagnamento di lavori meno faticosi.

Drunken Sailor è poi divenuta una canzone popolare fra i non-marinai nel XX secolo, fino a essere considerata uno dei canti marinareschi più conosciuti dal pubblico. Numerosi artisti ne hanno proposto la loro versione in registrazioni e/o esibizioni e i media hanno contribuito alla sua popolarità. Anche se non esiste una versione univoca del testo, esso contiene costantemente la domanda What shall we do with a drunken sailor, early in the morning? (letteralmente: Cosa faremo con un marinaio ubriaco, la mattina presto?). In alcune versioni, i versi successivi suggeriscono metodi per alleviare la sbornia o punire il marinaio ubriaco. Altre versioni, invece, prevedono il susseguirsi di ulteriori domande e risposte relative ad altri personaggi.

An arrangement of the Ã…land Islands National Song (Song of the Ã…lander - Ã…länningens sÃ¥ng)  for Brass Quintet.

Ã…länningens sÃ¥ng (English: Song of the Ã…lander; Finnish: Ahvenanmaalaisten laulu), is the official anthem of the Ã…land Islands, an autonomous Swedish-speaking province of Finland. Adopted in 1922, the anthem's words are by John Grandell and the music was composed by Johan Fridolf Hagfors. The song was first performed during the song festival in Mariehamn 1922. In Ã…land the song is mostly sung on Midsummer's Eve and on the National day of Ã…land in June 9th. The song originally had four verses, but the third verse is omitted for a long time when the song is sung and often when it appears in print.

Johan Fridolf Hagfors (11 March 1857–18 August 1931) was a Swedish newspaper publisher, music critic and composer, most known for having composed the two songs ModersmÃ¥lets sÃ¥ng (The mother tongue's song) and Ã…länningens sÃ¥ng (Song of the Ã…lender).

Born in Orimattila, he got a Cand.phil degree in 1881. In 1883 he became publicist of the small Ã…bo paper Turun Lehti which was published in Finnish but at the same time Svecoman; it became the only newspaper with that combination to reach a wide readership. He also worked as a teacher in Ã…bo.

He composed several songs for male quartets. ModersmÃ¥lets sÃ¥ng was first performed in 1989 and is today considered an unofficial hymn for the Swedish-speaking population of Finland. Ã…länningens sÃ¥ng, for which he composed the melody, was first performed during the song festival in Mariehamn in 1922 and is today the regional hymn for the Ã…land islands.

In 1912 he became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music.

Due to stiff competition, Turun Lehti ceased publication in 1919. Hagfors subsequently moved to Stockholm and obtained Swedish citizenship. He died in 1931. Fellow composer Erik August Hagfors was his half-brother.
