Brother James' Air was composed by James Leith Macbeth Bain (1860-1925), a Scottish-born poet, author, mystic, and healer whose ministry took him to Liverpool and London, where he became known simply as Brother James. The tune is often sung to the metrical paraphrase of Psalm 23, The Lord's My Shepherd, by the Puritan religious author and English politician Francis Rous (c. 1581-1659), published in his The Psalms of David set forth in English meeter (1643). The angular, highly arpeggiated tune in bar form (AAB) is both stark and lovely, rising and falling before ascending to a high tonic cadence in its final phrase. Its harmonic simplicity — consisting primarily of I, IV, and V chords — lends itself to alternate harmonizations with substitute chords. Following a short introduction, this arrangement presents the tune four times: first, alternating between the two trumpets; second, by trio of horn, trombone, and tuba; third, in minor tonality (reflecting the psalm's verse 4 and the text's paraphrase, Yea, though I walk thro' death’s dark vale); and fourth, with powerful extended harmonies and surprise cadences resolving to a quiet, peaceful conclusion.  ©Copyright 2023 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music (ASCAP). Attempts to stay true to the recorded version by The Browns were made, including a bit of somewhat complicated rhythmic writing in the beginning chorale and subsequent like sections. Good communication is needed here, as this section should have a free feel (it is recommended that ensemble members be well-acquainted with the original version as to properly grasp the nature of the passage).This is a lovely song that makes for a beautiful piece for brass quintet sure to please audiences of all types.

Park Day in Japan, Op. 153, for brass quintet.  This beautiful piece of music was largely composed in my head during a family visit to Showa Park in Tokyo, Japan.  Tulip season was at its peak, the weather was superb, and the happy throngs of Japanese people enjoying the beauty of their park were inspiring.  The lovely eight-measure chord progression is reminiscent of Pachelbel’s “Canon in D.”  The harmonic eight-bar ostinato create a hypnotic foundation over which multiple lines at times reach a high level of polyphonic complexity, while at other times only the chords are present with simple rhythmic statement.  This composition could be used for concerts in any setting, or even as a substitute for Pachelbel’s famous work if a bride and groom are tired of the cliché nuptial tradition.  Duration: 3:40.
