Released as a single from their eponymous debut album, it reached No. 4 on the R&B chart and No. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100. The tune was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2011, which honors recordings of lasting qualitative or historical significance that are at least 25 years old. The A.V. Club called the song a classic deeply rooted in New Orleans music tradition.Cissy Strut was featured in the films Jackie Brown, Red, King Richard and Another Round as well as in the BBC television series The Pursuit of Love.In 2021, Rolling Stone ranked Cissy Strut at number 158 on their 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list, one of the handful of instrumentals to make the list.Many transcribers of this tune obscure the 1/4 notes by improperly beaming the 1/16 notes. This arrangement fixes that issue. The tune uses the Boden form used by Bartok and is used when playing jazz ballads.

It was originally released by White on his 1969 album, Continued, on Monument Records, shortly before Benton's hit single was issued. Benton recorded the song in November 1969 with arranger/producer Arif Mardin at Criteria Studios in Miami, Florida. Benton had signed to a new record label, Cotillion Records (a subsidiary of Atlantic Records), by label A&R chief and producer Jerry Wexler. The RIAA certified the single gold for sales of one million copies. In 2004, it was ranked #498 on the List of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.This track features Cornell Dupree's guitar parts that are a masterclass on using double stops in Soul music, plus plenty of hammer on/pull off fills throughout. The title track of the album, Road Song, was previously known as OGD on the Jimmy Smith collaboration, standing for organ, guitar and drums.I beleive it was also named that because the musicians saw the abreviations on the mixing console.This is a transcription of the earlier Jimmy Smith version.The album by the jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery, released in 1968. It reached number one on the Billboard Jazz album chart and number 39 on the R&B chart. It also reached number 94 on the Billboard 200. It was his final recording before his death of a heart attack on June 15, 1968. The track was originally recorded by Wes Montgomery and Jimmy Smith while Creed Taylor was still with Verve, was not released until after Taylor had left Verve.

The Chicken or simply Chicken is an instrumental funk tune composed by Pee Wee Ellis that was the B-side to James Brown's 1969 single The Popcorn. Pat Martino released it on the 1968 album East! Despite the title and the cover of this CD  reissue (which makes it appear that the performances are greatly influenced by music of the Far East),  the style played by guitarist Pat Martino's quartet is very much in the hard bop tradition. Martino was  already developing his own sound and is in excellent form with pianist Eddie Green, drummer Lenny  McBrowne, and either Ben Tucker or Tyrone Brown on bass during two group originals, Benny  Golson's Park Avenue Petite, John Coltrane's Lazy Bird, and the standard Close Your Eyes.  It's a good example of Pat Martino's playing in his early period.
