The East is Red Based on a traditional folk melody from Shaanxi province in northern China, this song’s lyrics were rewritten twice; firstly in 1944, to describe the Chinese struggle against Japanese occupation, and again in 1949, as a hymn to Chairman Mao. It later became the title song of a Chinese Communist film and served as the country’s unofficial national anthem during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976).This technically straightforward and uncluttered arrangement allows the famous melody to be clearly heard, so ensure to articulate every note as clearly and expressively as possible. Aim for a steady build of emotion and volume throughout.

It is one of my all-time favourite Swedish folk songs. The text of the song is a poetic expression of longing felt for a loved-one. The arrangement goes in a slow waltz with a slight swing and would work well as a dance for romantic couples.The arrangement uses broken chords with many open strings which are meant to ring out while the melody floats above. The open strings in the chords give the piece a slightly modal character that is typical of many Swedish folk melodies.The notation and tabs contain extensive left and right hand fingering and is easily within reach of intermediate students of fingerstyle acoustic guitar.

Liuyang RiverThe Liuyang river is a section of the Xiangjiang river in China’s Hunan province; the original composition contains lyrics praising the beautiful scenery surrounding the river.This arrangement begins with the song’s melody played in the guitar’s low register with very sparse harmony, in an attempt to evoke the sound of a guqin; this section should be performed quietly but confidently and with a lot of rubato, almost as if the melody is being improvised by a guqin player. Be careful to maintain clear separation between melody and accompaniment, great importance is given to purity of melody in Chinese music so make sure that every note is given its full duration. Articulate all of the legato phrases smoothly throughout in order to create the impression of the flowing Liuyang River.
