The History of the Tune 'Miss Stewart of Garth'

Miss Stewart of Garth is a Scottish reel with a long and interesting history. The tune is believed to have originated in the early 18th century and was likely composed by a Scottish fiddler. It was first published in the late 18th century in the Scots Musical Museum, a collection of Scottish songs and tunes compiled by James Johnson.

The title Miss Stewart of Garth refers to a woman named Anne Stewart, who was the daughter of John Stewart, the laird of Garth. The Garth estate was located in Perthshire, Scotland, and was known for its picturesque beauty and its association with the Jacobite cause.

During the 18th century, the Jacobites were a political movement in Scotland that sought to restore the Stuart dynasty to the throne of Great Britain. Many Highlanders supported the Jacobite cause, and the Garth estate was known to be sympathetic to their efforts.

It's possible that Miss Stewart of Garth was composed as a tribute to Anne Stewart or as a way of expressing support for the Jacobite cause. The tune has a melancholy and wistful quality that has made it a favorite among Scottish musicians and dancers for centuries.

Over the years, Miss Stewart of Garth has been played in many different contexts, from traditional Highland gatherings to modern concerts and recordings. Its enduring popularity is a testament to the beauty and power of Scottish music, and it remains a beloved part of Scotland's cultural heritage to this day.

This is a lovely arrangement for finger-style guitar of a beautiful folk song from Scotland. The Skye boat song is an beautiful tune and it sits nicely under the fingers in this guitar sheet music. It is simple but with a number of position changes which is where itā€™s difficulty level moves into the more intermediate range. This music for guitar probably sits around the Grade 4 mark.

This would sit nicely amongst a repertoire of traditional music for recital, exam, or a during a rest period a one a set of traditional Scottish dance or even used as a piece for a waltz.Ā
