Peters. The Album Leaves were composed over the span of almost fifteen years. As such, they present a fascinating cross-section of Grieg's pianistic and compositional development. They are arranged in chronological order as follows: Allegro con moto (1864), Allegretto espressivo (1874), Vivace (1876), and Andantino serioso (1878).Having realized some years ago that due to Grieg’s way of writing for the piano, that they would fit wonderfully on two guitars, I began with this set, and then moved onto more of his works, finally transcribing his complete set of 10 books of Lyric Pieces (66 pieces in all), all of which are available as separate publications at Les Productions D’Oz. Visit my website (below) to easily find the other version.This fantastic piece was written as an integral part of the film 'While I Live', and such is the power and emotion in the music, it has achieved a recognition that has far outlasted the film.My arrangement for two guitars captures all of the original, fiendishly difficult, piano composition, but uses the sweet tone of the guitar to add quality, rather than quantity, to the notes, creating a soundscape that works effectively and makes a wonderful concert piece lasting almost 4 minutes.The centre section has a simpler accompaniment than the original to avoid an overly fussy and unsatisfactory sound. Elsewhere the accompaniment is less rhythmically busy than the original, yet the chords are retained.There are two arrangements in this one edition...Version 1 allocates the music to the players as if they were the left and right hands of the piano piece - ideal for a duo in which one player is technically stronger than the other (for example a student/teacher duet).Version 2 swaps the roles around at the phrase boundaries and suits a well-matched duo.The choice of which you play is yours...The arpeggios are fingered because they generally only work well in one position. The melody, by contrast, is unfingered; it is chromatic and so there is no place on the neck where all the notes are accessible. My arrangement can be played as a performance piece, or with a small adjustment, as a student/teacher duet.My arrangement has two verses, and these are orchestrated differently - one in an arpeggio style and one in a countermelody style. You can mix and match the arrangements as you wish and it’s easy to add extra verses too. The tune is fairly low in pitch so that the tone is warm and mellow, but it needs to project over the accompaniment which straddles it in pitch.If you play the arrangement as written, each player gets a verse on the tune and a verse playing the accompaniment - perfect for performance.If you are a teacher, then your student can play just the page containing the tune, and you can accompany them - indeed, if you take their second page, you can play two different accompaniments while they play two verses of the tune...I hope you enjoy this piece!

This duet has been tried and tested and is very enjoyable to play for both players.The full score with both parts together is given first with both parts later shown separately, with some fingering and rehearsal marks included where I thought they would be helpful.

For that reason, they are very popular during the Christmas season and often used in traditional wedding services. This PDF includes detailed fingerings and interpretation in standard notation.
