SAMAN - accessible, gentle piece for 2 GUITARS
Intended for classical guitar, though sometimes it gets listed erroneously under electric guitar.

Derek Hasted writes Composed for piano in the key of 3 flats, this gentle piece has a timeless, ethereal sound.

There are a handful of arrangements for solo guitar using a Capo to recreate the original key, but it’s hard to recreate the spacious, effortless sound and pedal sustain of the piano. 

My duet version places the piece in a different key, where the guitar breathes more easily, and the two players create a delightful stereo effect that makes the sound “biggerâ€. The difficult chords and stretches, the awkward sustains - they’ve all gone, and the result is an accessible duet that will delight audiences with its grace and smoothness.

Samba Lelê is a Brazilian folk song very well known mainly in the interior of the states of Brazil. This song was adapted for two guitars in the rhythm of Maracatu (a typical rhythm of the Northeast region of the country). Initially designed for guitar students in the first years of study, the arrangement works with elements such as Natural Harmonics, Dynamics and Syncopation (very common in Brazilian rhythms).

The Argentinian ‘New Tango’ movement has greatly influenced many composers by departing from traditional tango concepts and incorporating elements of jazz and virtuosic ideas. Libero is no exception. Meaning “free” in Italian, this piece is a collaborative creation by Belgian guitarist Sam Desmet and Venezuelan guitarist Pablo Briceno?, who interpret Piazzolla’s legacy in their own unique way. 

Rather than presenting a dialogue, Libero showcases a convergence of a rhythmic main theme supported by a syncopated yet insistent accompaniment, resulting in a vibrant and energetic instrumental piece.

DEVIL'S GALOP (Dick Barton Theme Tune) - TWO GUITARS
For Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.

Derek Hasted writes This evocative tune was the theme music to Dick Barton Special Agent, a radio drama on the BBC many decades ago.

The music is full of tension, with rising chromatic chords and long chromatic scale passages creating a constant restless feel.

The roles of tune and accompaniment swap over increasingly often as the piece progresses, so the audience will have plenty to watch as well as hear.

The accompaniment role is fingered, as there’s really only one place on the guitar to play the chords. The tune, though, is unfingered - there is a compromise between the short reach in high positions and the extra height of the action - you may prefer to stay up the neck, or you may wish to move up and down - please add fingering and position changes where you wish. And add slurs too, if these improve the flow of the music.

Here and there, I have deliberately “respelled†some of the accidentals in a way that hopefully improves overall readability, and sometimes the two parts have two representations of the same note at the same time.

A version of this was played by the Hampshire Guitar Orchestra who also managed to find time to mop their brows in the occasional pauses in the action.

Derek Hasted writes Many guitarists will know Zipoli’s “Little Fugueâ€, though maybe not his Fughetta in Em.

In this edition I have changed the key of both fugues to land on the “sweet spot†of the guitar’s neck, and to allow players to segue neatly from the Fughetta (in Am with a Tierce de Picardie ending in A major) to the Little Fugue (in A major).

The music is laid out so that players can stay with the same part on both pieces, or swap seamlessly to the other part with no loss of continuity and no page turns.

Guitar 1 is intermediate, Guitar 2 is easier - ideal for a student/teacher duo or (by swapping parts between pieces) a lovely performance item for a well-matched duo.

There is a little left hand fingering, but no dynamics - please feel free to add your own dynamics and articulation to make the performance “yoursâ€.

Derek Hasted writes This song burst back into my consciousness when it was played as a Viennese Waltz in the BBC TV program “Strictly Come Dancingâ€.

The ponderous, downbeat, original became light, inspiring, uplifting and very beautiful.

Here’s the version that was on TV - the same key as the original but slightly shorter.

One guitar takes the tune, the other (with the bottom string tuned to D) takes the accompaniment - there is really no seamless way to swap roles partway through, so as well as a concert piece it’s an excellent Student/Teacher duet to teach some rhythms that are unexpected.

This is the tune that everyone has heard, and no-one knows its name... It makes it perfect for concerts!

Derek Hasted writes It’s featured in Octopussy and Mary Poppins, it’s been on Sesame Street, it’s famous for being Trapeze Music in circus scenes. You might even recognise it from a Chet Atkins guitar record, on which this arrangement is styled.

This arrangement is based on one I wrote for my Guitar Workshop - it's really easy to play...

There are two versions of the Part Score in this edition...
Version 1 is ideal for a Student/Teacher duet - the Teacher plays the chords, and the student takes the tune.
Version 2 is great for a performance at any level between two players with comparable tone and volume - it’s written as a Call & Response version, which, just like the circus trapeze artists, move from left to right, crossing over in mid-air...

I always keep fingering to a minimum, but skilled players will find the melody line fits almost perfectly into VII position.
