Derek Hasted writes I have made two arrangements of this lovely piece. This edition contains the more accessible arrangement - ideal for an intermediate duo or a student/teacher duo. Visit my website (below) to easily find the other version.

This fantastic piece was written as an integral part of the film 'While I Live', and such is the power and emotion in the music, it has achieved a recognition that has far outlasted the film.

My arrangement for two guitars captures all of the original, fiendishly difficult, piano composition, but uses the sweet tone of the guitar to add quality, rather than quantity, to the notes, creating a soundscape that works effectively and makes a wonderful concert piece lasting almost 4 minutes.

The centre section has a simpler accompaniment than the original to avoid an overly fussy and unsatisfactory sound. Elsewhere the accompaniment is less rhythmically busy than the original, yet the chords are retained.

There are two arrangements in this one edition...
Version 1 allocates the music to the players as if they were the left and right hands of the piano piece - ideal for a duo in which one player is technically stronger than the other (for example a student/teacher duet).
Version 2 swaps the roles around at the phrase boundaries and suits a well-matched duo.

The choice of which you play is yours...

The arpeggios are fingered because they generally only work well in one position. The melody, by contrast, is unfingered; it is chromatic and so there is no place on the neck where all the notes are accessible. Itâ€™s really a matter of personal choice where you change position and whether you prefer to stay high up the neck or venture down to get a brighter tone.

SPEAK SOFTLY LOVE - GUITAR DUET

Derek Hasted writes This haunting piece suits a guitar duet so well. My arrangement can be played as a performance piece, or with a small adjustment, as a student/teacher duet.

My arrangement has two verses, and these are orchestrated differently - one in an arpeggio style and one in a countermelody style. You can mix and match the arrangements as you wish and itâ€™s easy to add extra verses too. The tune is fairly low in pitch so that the tone is warm and mellow, but it needs to project over the accompaniment which straddles it in pitch.

If you play the arrangement as written, each player gets a verse on the tune and a verse playing the accompaniment - perfect for performance.

If you are a teacher, then your student can play just the page containing the tune, and you can accompany them - indeed, if you take their second page, you can play two different accompaniments while they play two verses of the tune...

Beethoven it isnâ€™t, but itâ€™s a fun novelty item to play in a school concert or even an informal adult concert.

This arrangement is based on one I wrote for my Guitar Workshop

There are two versions of the piece in this file - theyâ€™re identical apart from who plays what when

Version 1 is ideal for a Student/Teacher duet - the Teacher plays the bass part, and the student takes the tune (or vice-versa!)

Version 2 is great for a performance at any level between two players with comparable tone and volume - the parts swap over when the music is repeated - you'll see the change at the point marked B in the scores.

Iâ€™ve left the fingering for the players to decide - we all have different abilities and the choice about when to go up the neck is always going to be a personal one.

Derek Hasted writes Rightly described as an astonishingly beautiful piece, this music from the film Local Hero actually features twice on the soundtrack album, in different keys with different solo instruments.

My arrangement for classical guitar exploits the soft tones of the nylon strings and works well at a slightly more modest pace compared to the original. Iâ??ve taken the theme from the closing soundtrack version, where the melody is clear and powerful. Each player in the ensemble takes the lead part in turn, and my arrangement includes one or two little bits of Mark Knopflerâ??s quasi-improvised variations on the tune.

This enjoyable concert item has a wonderfully captivating melody that the audience will be humming all the way home...Â

My duet arrangement comes in 2 formats...Â
This one (for student and teacher) comprises a melody line set in both score and score tab and a teacher's accompaniment set in score only. The student line is early intermediate and the teacher's part is advanced intermediate.
A separate performance version (in which the workload is shared equally and thereâ??s a truly effortless switching of parts in the middle), set in score-only for two advanced intermediate players.

Derek Hasted writes This haunting piece, with the most amazing â€œbuild and fade awayâ€, moves nicely from â€œvoice and pianoâ€ to â€œguitar duetâ€. It will suit an intermediate duo.

There are two versions in this one edition - they contain the same material. One version is tune and accompaniment, and is ideal for a Student/Teacher pairing, or a duo with an early intermediate and an intermediate player. The other version swaps roles halfway through, so the parts are both intermediate.

Iâ€™ve made a significant change to the key here, but that allows the guitar to produce a haunting first verse where a stopped B and an open B ring through each other to generate a smoothness of accompaniment that is sublime and mimics the reverberant piano of the original.

The arpeggio patterns here match closely those of the original piano too, giving verses 1 and 2 quite different texture. Sadly there is no orchestra and massed choir to build this version in the way that the original does, but the dynamics on the score tie in with the original song.

The guitar parts here are in â€œscore and tabâ€ and in â€œscore aloneâ€ - there is no difference in the music, but the tab may help notation readers see how the opening section sits on the neck of the guitar.
