DEVIL'S GALOP (Dick Barton Theme Tune) - TWO GUITARSFor Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.Derek Hasted writes This evocative tune was the theme music to Dick Barton Special Agent, a radio drama on the BBC many decades ago.The music is full of tension, with rising chromatic chords and long chromatic scale passages creating a constant restless feel.The roles of tune and accompaniment swap over increasingly often as the piece progresses, so the audience will have plenty to watch as well as hear.The accompaniment role is fingered, as there’s really only one place on the guitar to play the chords. The tune, though, is unfingered - there is a compromise between the short reach in high positions and the extra height of the action - you may prefer to stay up the neck, or you may wish to move up and down - please add fingering and position changes where you wish. And add slurs too, if these improve the flow of the music.Here and there, I have deliberately “respelled� some of the accidentals in a way that hopefully improves overall readability, and sometimes the two parts have two representations of the same note at the same time.A version of this was played by the Hampshire Guitar Orchestra who also managed to find time to mop their brows in the occasional pauses in the action.I hope you enjoy playing this piece! It contains all the material from one of the recordings of this piece, including the intro and the instrumental break in the middle of the piece.My arrangement is at the Intermediate level. The accompaniment comprises a ragtime swinging bass which makes the piece motor along. The tune is handed from player to player, switching at each phrase boundary, and appears in three different octaves during the piece, while still remaining on the playable part of the guitar neck.There are no repeats in this piece, and that allows changes to the texture in the successive verses.I’ve performed this piece in concert and it’s always been a great crowd-pleaser.I have also published a version which suits a student/teacher duo or a duo of mixed abilities which is a little easier to play. LOCAL HERO - WILD THEME - 2 GUITARS Performance Version Primarily for classical guitar but also suits acoustic or electric guitars.Derek Hasted writes Rightly described as an astonishingly beautiful piece, this music from the film Local Hero actually features twice on the soundtrack album, in different keys with different solo instruments.My arrangement for classical guitar exploits the soft tones of the nylon strings and works well at a slightly more modest pace compared to the original. I’ve taken the theme from the closing soundtrack version, where the melody is clear and powerful. Each player takes the lead part in turn, and my arrangement includes one or two little bits of Mark Knopfler’s quasi-improvised variations on the tune.There’s left hand fingering in a few places where the accompaniment is only comfortable in one position. The suite is scored for classical guitar duet with a total performance time of 18 minutes. Each movement, however, works well as a stand alone concert piece. Individual movement titles are: Angel of Shavano, Tie Hacks, Hanging Tree, and Grave of Charlie Reynolds. The level of demand for the performers is intermediate to advanced. This edition contains the more accessible arrangement - ideal for an intermediate duo or a student/teacher duo. Visit my website (below) to easily find the other version.This fantastic piece was written as an integral part of the film 'While I Live', and such is the power and emotion in the music, it has achieved a recognition that has far outlasted the film.My arrangement for two guitars captures all of the original, fiendishly difficult, piano composition, but uses the sweet tone of the guitar to add quality, rather than quantity, to the notes, creating a soundscape that works effectively and makes a wonderful concert piece lasting almost 4 minutes.The centre section has a simpler accompaniment than the original to avoid an overly fussy and unsatisfactory sound. Elsewhere the accompaniment is less rhythmically busy than the original, yet the chords are retained.There are two arrangements in this one edition...Version 1 allocates the music to the players as if they were the left and right hands of the piano piece - ideal for a duo in which one player is technically stronger than the other (for example a student/teacher duet).Version 2 swaps the roles around at the phrase boundaries and suits a well-matched duo.The choice of which you play is yours...The arpeggios are fingered because they generally only work well in one position. The melody, by contrast, is unfingered; it is chromatic and so there is no place on the neck where all the notes are accessible. It’s really a matter of personal choice where you change position and whether you prefer to stay high up the neck or venture down to get a brighter tone.Dedicated to the memory of my maternal grandmother Olwen
