The individual parts for Talon. This 12-bar blues composition was named for its sharp, aggressive nature. It uses the standard AA’B structure of a blues, but some of the chord choices in the A section are extremely unconventional. The end of the B section, however, has a very audible melodic peak that then descends towards either a repeat of the form (for improvisation) or a conclusion to the song.

Al Jarreau's 1981 hit, Roof Garden arranged for an advanced to high intermediate big band, with lots of room to feature Tenor 1 (and/or others) in solos. Tension is built through hand claps and rhythm section, before explosive full band shouts launch the full groove. Space is left for individuals to provide fills, using written parts or improvised as ability allows. A great piece that grabs attention to start or end concerts.
