Jazz Ensemble Jazz Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1248681 By Billy Taylor. By Billy Taylor. Arranged by Matthew Darwin. Jazz,Standards. Score and Parts. 74 pages. Matthew Darwin #843179. Published by Matthew Darwin (A0.1248681). The classic Billy Taylor composition, made famous by Nina Simone and use on Barry Norman's Film programmes, arranged for Big Band - 5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, piano, bass and drums. Piano leads the way, followed by a solo with band backings, into a key change for a great sax section soli.  Solos for trumpet and baritone saxophone follow before breaking down into an unaccompanied sax and trombone a capella section.  The final climax of the piece drops down to the piano with the band singing the refrain before a big ending! Concert and transposing scores included, along with full band parts.

Jazz Ensemble Jazz Ensemble - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.774335 Composed by Brad Esbensen. Arranged by Brad Esbensen. Blues,Jazz. Score and Parts. 82 pages. Brad Esbensen Music Services #3537877. Published by Brad Esbensen Music Services (A0.774335). FIX IT AGAIN TONY! is an original composition for big band and featured as a set piece for the 2002 Australian Academy Festival of Music B Grade Jazz Ensemble division. It is a blues in F with a grooving shuffle feel.  In the opening choruses, the big band is divided into three smaller combos playing the head, backing riffs and rhythmic stabs.  Be sure to have the players listen carefully to each other and to be aware of which combo they belong to.  Solo space is provided for the 2nd Trumpet and 1st Trombone players, although this could be opened up to feature other band members. The solo section is followed by a Sax section soli before the head returns to take the chart out.  The inspiration for this title came from my first car - a 1970 FIAT 124 - which provided me with many years of enjoyable motoring.  Any automotive enthusiast will get the joke in this title.www.bemus.com

Jazz Ensemble Jazz Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.927181 Composed by George Willson. Blues,Jazz. Score and parts. 46 pages. George Willson #6359467. Published by George Willson (A0.927181). Written for the T-Town Jazz Band and named for a Tulsa landmark, this is a big band swing tune in F minor blues with solos and exposure aplenty most notably in the third trombone part. The piece follows a chap who is happily walking (or jaunting) down Cherry Street. Three other guys come in and pick up his melody as a unison trio. This moves into a quick verse in the ensemble before the four players each take a solo turn almost like a combo. The party then takes off with the full band before it moves back to the trio wandering off while crowd bids them farewell and the original soloist takes a final turn. The reason there is such a focus on the third trombone is because this piece is dedicated to Dale Turner who was the third trombone player in the T-Town Jazz Band and a founding member of the band. We tried to get him to improv a solo here and there, but he wouldn't do it. We figured if we wrote it into his part, he would play it, and so the next piece I was writing was Cherry Street Jaunt, so the 3rd trombone got a lot of love. Unfortunately, the band had to shut down for a time due to COVID-19, and during that time, Dale passed due to complications from it. As a result, he never saw the part I wrote to trick him into a solo. The MP3 is generated from the composition program, but the video link is a live performance.

Jazz Ensemble Jazz Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1308790 Composed by Charles Tenet. Arranged by Tobi Crawford. Jazz. Set of parts. 10 pages. Tobi Crawford #898036. Published by Tobi Crawford (A0.1308790). *THIS ACCOMPANIES THE VOCAL ARRANGEMENT* This arrangement came to me over a number of weeks in a very organic way that began with the ostinato piano figure that prevails throughout the piece. I began playing it unattached to any tune and I just liked the way the line descended in the left hand and how I had to find voicings in the right hand that made harmonic sense – like a puzzle. As I was playing around with this puzzle, thoughts of my father were swirling around in my head – I was at the end of a 4 year period of separation from my parents owing to the fact that I’m a Canadian expat living in the US and the borders were closed for a long time because of Covid, and then I had work visa issues and my parents were getting older before my eyes. They were also losing friends to cancer and other ailments and my dad, in particular, had experienced the loss of many close family members and friends during our separation and it was taking a toll. One day I sat down and played the now familiar-to-me ostinato but randomly I started to sing “Beyond the Sea†over it and it fit perfectly. I thought it a happy coincidence. As the days went on I committed to putting my ostinato with Beyond the Sea and the lyrics started to seep into my brain. I have, of course, heard these lyrics many times before, (who hasn’t seen Finding Nemo?) but the lyrics didn’t mean what I thought they meant… They’re NOT about the ocean, they are about my dad!!! Well, kind of… I realized, through careful reflection and by slowing the words down, that the lyrics are talking about a person in heaven who is patiently waiting for their partner to join them. Somewhere beyond the seaShe’s there watching for me…It’s far beyond the starsIt’s near beyond the moon And the lyrics end with them meeting, “We’ll meet beyond the shore, we’ll kiss just like before,†and the song ends with: “and never again I’ll go sailing.†It’s like the big bang went off in my head about why all these thoughts of my dad, and his friends, and this arrangement, and what it all meant suddenly just MADE SENSE and I was able to start formulating a plan. Performance Suggestions: The improvisation solo in the middle should be free of any traditional “scat syllables†and should be more of a lament. Listen to singers like Aubrey Johnson improvise on ballads for inspiration. An idea for that improv section might be to have a male singer start the improv, then a female singer joins (as if together in heaven) then they sing letter F together (warning: will cause tears…). All solo sections do not have to be sung as written – soloists can take liberties with the melody as the spirit moves.

Jazz Ensemble Jazz Ensemble - Digital Download SKU: A0.947280 Composed by John Philips. Jazz. Score and parts. 36 pages. John Philips Music Service #3867733. Published by John Philips Music Service (A0.947280). This is a funky 2 beat built on double (24 bar) blues. It has an optional vocal,( cued in for alto sax) that should be sung thru a megaphone like the old Winchester Cathedral. The title comes from a pattern of speech found only in Chicago where people still say over by here and over by there. It swings well and invites a couple tambourines playing on 2 and 4. This is a fun chart but is very correct musically even if you expect the Blues Brothers to show up when it’s played. It can be opened for solos if needed. Don’t get too serious about the vocal, it’s best with your worst singer, maybe with a clothes-pin on his nose.   Enjoy it with your audience. If you want a Maynard or Buddy chart, look elsewhere. This series of charts uses nothing more complicated than eighth notes, are not frantic or screamers, extreme ranges and are hemi-demi-semi-quaver free. They depend on intonation and the players being not intimidated by what he is asked to play. There is no contest to see how high you can go before you need oxygen , how many notes you can play in 9 seconds or before your bell overheats , or how long it takes the audience to cover their earsRelaxed and confident players always play more in tune. Good harmonies, lines and realistic rhythm patterns will produce a good result that will swing and be enjoyed by player and listener alike.

Jazz Ensemble Jazz Ensemble - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.947265 Composed by John Philips. Blues,Jazz. Score and parts. 17 pages. John Philips Music Service #3867627. Published by John Philips Music Service (A0.947265). Very easy chart for middle schools on up. Based on 12 bar blues it runs at about 140 and has simple themes that are done with unison sections. It’ funky 2 beat and make you want to clap your hands on 2 & 4. Fun to play, younger players can do it and learn. It usually works to have the horn players that are not playing in the first part of the chat clap their hands over their head on 2 and 4. This will get the people into it. This is a simple funky 2 beat and should be kept that way. Piano has dissonant afterbeats--should be soft.If you want a Maynard or Buddy chart, look elsewhere. Published by John Philips Music Service (A0.947275). This a very real Latin in the style of Perez Perado. It is in mambo style and like all Latin it must have a claves playerfull time or is is not Latin. It is not difficult but requires good intonation and a drummer that plays the correct rhythm--not the usual heavy on 3 rock.If you want a Maynard or Buddy chart, look elsewhere.
