This hard swinging, up tempo arrangement is written in the style of the Count Basie Orchestra.  It starts out small with a Piano solo and builds throughout with additional solos in the Trumpet, Tenor Sax, and Trombone. On the Brink is a 10-minute long work for jazz trio combined with string quartet. It features continuous form, slow and organic development, engaging counterpoint, and advanced, dissonant harmonies. The piece contains two main themes-the A theme evokes despair and wondering; the B theme, longing and tension. The two themes are introduced towards the beginning, and they are used throughout the whole piece in various angles and representations. There is an open solo section for whomever desires to improvise.
