This chart has several unusual aspects, all set within this familiar format. The theme is stated by the trumpets, then, the saxes take a one-chorus interlude on a pentatonic figure. The first (and ONLY) soloist on the audio track is the tenor sax. BUT, the chart is designed to have the alto, tenor, bari, and finally All THREE saxes blowing their blues away at once! A similar treatment follows with the trumpets. Three blues choruses from the piano give the horns a break, and a SampleSolo is included for this instrument ONLY, due to the nature of the group improv that is structured into the piece. Then the trombones have their 12-bar interlude, and the lead trombone plays three more 12-bar sets, but just the one horn, as we've had enough group enthusiasm at this point! At the conclusion, the three interlude sections all come back, but simultaneously, as they have been designed to fit together. Then the final statement of the theme is played in hocket or stretto, whichever term you choose, with one voice starting and the other two choirs following behind. This chart can be played using only one soloist per section, or with the entire group solos, or anything in between, for that matter! If you have a blowing band, you'll want to show them off! Running time with a single soloist per section is 3 mins 45 secs. considerably longer with the multiple and group solos. MBB.

This piece is a very unique groovy funk chart that feels ridiculously laid back. The rhythm of the melody appears to be very challenging at the start, however once you have it embedded in your brain, it will never leave, and the piece becomes very easy to play. What if Benny Carter had not sailed for Europe in 1935 to become staff arranger with the BBC, but instead had helped out Benny Goodman with providing scores for his ‘Let’s Dance’ program? And suppose Carter had done the same trick that Fletcher Henderson pulled later on, e.g. adapting already existing scores of his own band for the Benny Goodman Orchestra? Carter’s ‘Symphony In Riffs’ is presented here as a piece that could have been a cornerstone of the Goodman band library. The sax soli written by Carter is there, but the clarinet dominates the second strain in a Glenn Miller-styled section, and of course later with an extended solo. Other soloists include trb 1, piano, tpt 2 and ts 1. The two different strains are juxtaposed to each other, to make for a maximum of variety. Scored for the line-up of the Benny Goodman Orchestra of 1935: solo clt/2 as/2 ts/3 tpt/2 trb/rhy. Tpt 1 to Eb3. Difficult for multiple reasons: • The clarinet soloist must be a first-class ‘BG-wannabe’. Fluent soloist, comfortable in the upper register. • Strong lead-alto required, with an old-skool ‘singing’ tone. • Lead trumpet must be able to ‘carry off’ the final section from bar 197 onwards. • Driving rhythm section needed; swinging (preferably acoustic) rhythm guitarist and a bassist who doesn’t shy away from playing compelling bass-lines. If your band meets these requirements: have fun!

Published by Benjamin Pritchard (A0.1109715). This arrangement is in memory of Eric Doney (piano) and Rick Chamberlain (trombone) who passed away with months of one another from cancers. The arrangement, therefore, features piano and trombone throughout. It begins with a potion of Eric Doney's songs called “A Winter’s Tale.� It should be played freely. The pianist should feel free to ad lib, add his/her own style, and expand from the basic lead sheet given. This introduction leads into Chopin’s Nocturne Opus 9 No. 2 featuring lead trombone with rhythm section. Rick CHamberlain was a great ballad player and had terrific range. This arrangement pays respect to Rick’s range and goes up to a high D! At measure 49 the band takes over, particularly the lead trumpet. The sax section takes over at measure 65 with an up tempo sax soli, which can be joined by lead trombone. That is followed by a rubato piano in Eric’s style feature, and then up tempo solo sections for both trombone and piano. The ballad feel come back at measure 131 until the end. The ending is an Eric Doney ending. He often used this ending in his version of “Amazing Grace.�.
