The trombone is an oft-neglected melody and solo instrument in the jazz ensemble, and here is a trombone section feature on the melody, with an improvised solo as well for the lead player. The saxes and trumpets also have soli sections, in harmony. The trombone melody is unison. Solo sections are broken up such that one player does the A-A, and another doe the B section and the final A. Sorry, no SampleSolo for the trumpet, but all others have one. The music is a riff on Am-Bb7, with a modal bridge that uses the parallel and relative majors of A minor. A nice little structural element! Rhythm section Uni-Part, Straight-through no D.S. al coda layout, and piano voicings and chord symbols make this as playable and clear for student, recreational, and pro ensembles. It's been designed to be played by large or small instrumental ensembles. It uses swing eighth note rhythms and incorporates most of the usual instruments of a concert band or orchestra, or jazz ensemble. Lyrics are not included, however it retains all six verses as it goes through key changes and a D.S. al Coda. Thus the lyrics from a hymn book could be used to sing all six verses. The first verse is a slow chorale style passage. Then it goes to fast tempo jazz style, much like a New Orleans style derge, or funeral march. The piece is 2:45 minutes in length, but could be shortened, by about 50 seconds, by playing straight through without taking the D.S. al Coda. It would also make an impressive half time show piece for marching band. A performance/play along track is available separately - see item number S0.873189.

Key: C major.This is a relatively easy-to-play big band arrangement of an iconic tune by Miles Davis from the album Kind of blue. So What is the earliest and most excellent example of modal jazz, which is more based on scales than chords. The scales applied are D-Dorian and Eb-Dorian. This opens for the solo player to concentrate on the melodic direction rather than be guided by chords. Hence, the soloists in this arrangement should practice their improvisations in D-Dorian (Dm7) and Eb-Dorian (Ebm7). The arrangement would be useful for amateurs, student big bands and even professional big bands with a Miles Davis project on the repertoire.

Your soloists only need to know two scales to solo on this tune: C dorian minor and Ab mixolydian. Range and technical demands are moderate. After the statement of the melody, an open solo section leads to a sax soli, then a great shout chorus. George completed his undergraduate degree at Oberlin Conservatory, and earned his masters and Ph.D. from Michigan State University. He founded the jazz programs at both schools while he was a student. George also founded the jazz program at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp (Muskegon, MI) in 1971 and led that program through 2004. After his retirement from James Madison University, he relocated to Deland, Florida, and led the jazz program at Stetson University until his passing in 2013.
