The initial idea for Somewhere (originally just a lead sheet) was inspired by the study of modal jazz harmony in a course taught by Dr. Johannes Wallmann, director of jazz studies at California State University, East Bay (currently Director of Jazz Studies at University of Wisconsin, Madison School of Music). In the case of Somewhere, it’s very subtle. The slow harmonic motion allows for different textures and sonorities to shift in and out of focus throughout the piece. Jazz Orchestra. Jazz Band. This arrangement of Iko Iko is written in D major and follows a form that is somewhere between the versions recorded by The Dixie Cups and Dr. John. It features a Bo Diddley New Orleans groove throughout along with an open solo section at the end of the chart for any player to have a blow over. Brass ranges are generally moderate (although some D6s are written in the trumpets and A5s in the trombones) and rhythm section parts are notated throughout.
