It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing) is a 1931 Duke Ellington composition now accepted as a jazz standard. The music was written and arranged by Ellington in August 1931 during intermissions at Chicago's Lincoln Tavern and was first recorded by Ellington and his orchestra on February 2, 1932. The song became famous, Ellington wrote, as the expression of a sentiment which prevailed among jazz musicians at the time. Probably the first song to use the phrase swing in the title, it introduced the term into everyday language and presaged the swing era by three years. The Ellington band played the song continually over the years and recorded it numerous times, most often with trumpeter Ray Nance as vocalist.

Jazz Ensemble Jazz Ensemble - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1108449 By Duke Ellington and his Orchestra. By Duke Ellington, Irving Mills, and Juan Tizol. Arranged by Ben Pritchard. Film/TV,Funk,Jazz,Rock. Score and parts. 70 pages. Benjamin Pritchard #711089. Published by Benjamin Pritchard (A0.1108449). This is a funky, quirky arrangement called Ridin' 'Cross the Desert on Camels which is fun to prepare and perform. This is a rock/funk chart that can be played without a guitar player but requires a solid electric bass player. The bass line is often harmonized in 10ths with the bass trombone and bari sax. The lead trumpet goes up to a B-flat (with 1 high C) and there are a few optional higher notes. The lead trombone only goes up to an F. The solo section is open for any instrument. The soli section (which takes solo licks from famous jazz greats) goes through each section and eventually is unision within the entire ensemble. This is a unique and funky take on this old school classic.
