Score. Arranged by Mike Kamuf. Funk; Jazz. Score. 15 pages. Alfred Music - Digital Sheet Music #00-PR-0005436. Published by Alfred Music - Digital Sheet Music (AX.00-PR-0005436).

UPC: 038081349756.

A contemporary treatment of this traditional jazz tune, arranger and band director Mike Kamuf combines multiple generations in one chart. With a shuffle groove, the opening melody is stated by alto, tenor, trumpet and optional guitar in fourths. Some countermelody development, solo space (written) for tenor and trumpet, then an interlude that builds big time into a powerful shout chorus to bring it home. It's a happening chart. (4:04)

This chart gives the New Orleans classic a funk treatment. The piece starts with a great introduction, and a vamp based on the melody follows each chorus. Written solos for the tenor sax and trumpet are in D minor and use some nice stylistic elements.

Composed by James Nathaniel Holland. Contemporary,Jazz,Latin. Score and parts. 232 pages. James Nathaniel Holland #3686065. Published by James Nathaniel Holland (A0.730468).

Despite being a New Yorker at the time, actually the year 2001 was an excellent year for me. I had the opportunity to take a grand tour to the wonderful country of Brazil which I had always dreamed about. I can say it didn't disappoint. Before computers could imitate an orchestra well, I bought in Salvador many Brazilian instruments and carted them back home. This piece for jazz orchestra was the beginning of my personal renaissance as a composer, and here it is, all shiny and new and revised.   The piece begins with a fast Samba, slows to mysterious calls of the rainforest, travels through Rio's bossa nova and ends with a bang. Great, serious piece for jazz concert.

Instrumentation: picc, fl, alto fl, clBb, TS, BS, Tpt 1234, trmb 123, Btrm, percussion (5) (surdo high and low, tri., vibraslap, tri., ride cym w.sft. mall. and st., rainstick, pandeiro (tam.), congas, claves, snare, w.blk) pno, full strings

If you are looking for a swinging addition to your holiday concert repertoire, George West's arrangement on Santa Claus is Comin' to Town is the chart you've been looking for! The melody is stated first by the trumpets, and the trombones take over at the bridge. Tenor sax has the solo, but there is an optional repeat for additional solos. This chart is one of my favorites, and it will have your audience tapping their toes!

Grade: 3
Ranges:

  • Trumpet: D6
  • Trombone: Bb4

Composed by George West. Arranged by George West and edited by CHRIS MAGEE. Jazz. Score and Parts. 92 pages. Dubba C Music #850377. Published by Dubba C Music (A0.1257042).

Spirit of 7 to 6 is a modal jazz tune by George West. Composed in the 1970s around the time of the American bicentennial celebration, the title also refers to meter changes between 7/4 (written as 4/4+3/4) and 6/4. Your soloists only need to know two scales to solo on this tune: C dorian minor and Ab mixolydian. Range and technical demands are moderate. After the statement of the melody, an open solo section leads to a sax soli, then a great shout chorus. If you are looking for a change of pace for your concert or assessment program, this is an excellent choice!

Grade: 3+

LAST NIGHT - arranged for pep band, basketball band, jazz combo, small jazz ensemble
__________________________

Great for pre/post-game, 60-second timeouts, or a quick half-time number, LAST NIGHT climbed to #3 on the Billboard Chart in 1961. An easy blend of R&B and rock, this tune is insanely easy (hence the low price), using only 3 different notes! You can make it even more fun by adding easy choreography for the winds - start with bells down, slowly rise during the crescendo, then alternate bells left, then right for each repeated measure.

This 54-second arrangement has an easy key and the well-marked rehearsal numbers reduce the amount of time needed in rehearsal.

Parts are formatted to fit in a flip-folder, but print on letter-sized paper if you prefer to use 3-ring binders.
