Sail Along Silvery Moon is a song written by Harry Tobias and Percy Wenrich in 1937 and originally performed by Bing Crosby, although covered later on by many artists including Andy Williams, Gene Autry and Slim Whitman. It reached #4 on the U.S. pop chart in 1937. in December 1957, saxophonist Billy Vaughn released an instrumental version of the song which went to #5 on the U.S. pop chart and #1 in Germany and in Canada. The following year, the song went #1 in Norway and made #4 in Australia. This arrangement for jazz ensemble follows the alto and tenor sax duet version by Vaughn, but makes these parts available for flute and clarinet if a doubling option is desired. It is adapted from Wasserman's non-musical 1959 teleplay I, Don Quixote, which was in turn inspired by Miguel de Cervantes and his 17th-century novel 'Don Quixote'. It tells the story of the 'mad' knight Don Quixote as a play within a play, performed by Cervantes and his fellow prisoners as he awaits a hearing with the Spanish Inquisition.
