Opening with a lovely brass chorale, this old-timey classic soon kicks into a swinging' jazz waltz, with a full-form sax soli leading the way. In the following open solo section, chord changes introduce developing soloists to circle progressions, but in easy-to-manage, repetitive 8-bar phrases. This is a big band original composition that is written in the Count Basie/ Sammy Nestico fashion with blues changes on the 13th chord premise. There a a few Shout choruses written for the ensemble with featured ad lib choruses for Alto Sax, Trumpet, Trombone & Piano. There is also an optional repeat at letter C if the director wishes to add more jazz choruses to the piece. This would be a great piece for a Junior College level or higher caliber of players skill. There may be a few high school ensembles that could manage it as well. .

This arrangement was written for one of the world's great Trombonists/Composers/Arrangers, ex-pat Aussie Adrian Mears all the way from his home in Germany where he teaches at Mannheim Conservatorium and the Basel Musik Academie. This tune is an original of mine from the 5th and B catalog, a group with Dave Storrs and more.  I wrote this shortly after a gig at a local place called Squirrel's where a young woman through a pickle from upstairs.  She was aiming for her boyfriend but the rascal managed to avoid her attack, whereby the pickle continued its angry trajectory and hit me rather harmlessly in the shoulder. We were on a band break at the time.  The pickle was a mystery.  Who had thrown it?  Or was it some sort of magical pickle?  The mystery was resolved when the young lady heard the band was talking about the amazing pickle and tracked me down to apologize. No harm!  And I was inspired to write this little ditty! .

Originally written by Grammy award winner Kevin Gilbert (Toy Matinee, Tuesday Night Music Club, and the solo records Thud, and Shaming of the True), Simpler Times was part of an unreleased collection of 1985 recordings by Kevin under the title Decent Exposure. During a period when Kevin was going by the name of Kai Gilbert he wrote, produced, and played all the instruments on three separate albums that have recently been formally released as part of the boxed set Call Me Kai.  Kevin was a music student of mine at Serra high School in San Mateo, CA (yes, the same high school attended by Tom Brady) and remained a dear friend until his untimely passing in 1996 at the young age of 29. The Kevin Gilbert Estate, under the name GPP, serves as manager for all of Kevin's intellectual property and they have granted me permission to create this arrangement for jazz band and pursue its publication. Unlike the original dance-oriented track, I've reimagined Simpler Times as a medium tempo, straight 8th rock ballad featuring alto sax.
