By Michael Drake. By Michael Drake. Arranged by Kevin Carberry. Broadway,Film/TV,Funk,Jazz,Musical/Show,Singer/Songwriter. 141 pages. Michael Gene Drake #935729. Published by Michael Gene Drake (A0.1350898).

Winters End - from the CD SAZZUNK, has a conversation with itself going back and forth between Funky and Latin rhythms. A simple, interval rich melody for the specialized trumpet solo or quartet in the Funky zone leads into Latin tags that introduce the rest of the band with accents that create tension for the transition sections. A short solo section sets up a continuation of the quartet restatement of the melody with all sections jumping in to play supportive roles. The primary solo section breaks down to an expanded quartet ensemble solo not designed for the faint of heart. The arrangement returns to the head with some twists and turns and wraps up in a building vamp to a sudden end!

Composed by Mark S. Massey. Blues,Jazz. Score and parts. 3 pages. Geofonica Artistworks #6038029. Published by Geofonica Artistworks (A0.948697).

Professor M & M's Jive Detector is a super cool, very bluesy instrumental jazz hit (in lead sheet format here) from pianist Mark Massey's breakthrough jazz LP: API: Acoustic Piano International. (NOTE: A Bb leadsheet is also available.) The piano and tenor sax interact, with sax and piano doubling the main melody (performed by guest saxophonist Plas Johnson--famed Wrecking Crew sax/woodwind player who was featured on The Pink Panther Theme), plus sax and piano in blues interplay and counterpoint. It's a great vehicle for musical interplay, blues/jazz improvisation, and laid-back bluesy rhythm section grooves. The API track features Plas Johnson on sax backed by the Mark Massey trio, with Eric Stiller on acoustic bass and Aldo Bentivegna on drums.

ABOUT MARK:
In 2018, the California State Assembly and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors issued proclamations recognizing Mark Massey as a Jazz Living Legend. Jazz pianist-composer Mark Massey was born and raised in Lynwood, California, where he showed early talent on piano, trombone, and drums. During high school, he studied classical piano and played in the bands Synopsis (with future trumpet giant Wayne Bergeron), and Sabor (with Poncho Sanchez and the Banda Brothers). Mark played in the Pico Rivera Stage Band, which won First Place at the Hollywood Bowl Battle of the Bands. Mark graduated from California State University, Long Beach (with Bachelors and Masters degrees in Music), where he was recipient of the Carmen Dragon Fellowship for composition and he was dubbed A Young Giant by the National Association Of Jazz Educators.

Mark has performed throughout the U.S., Europe, the former Soviet Union (in the 1980s), Russia (2001), the Far East and India. He has worked with Larry Carlton, David Benoit, Paul Horn, Hubert Laws, Louie Bellson, the Side Street Strutters, Phil Upchurch, L. Subramaniam, Freddie Hubbard, Maynard Ferguson, Yehudi Menuhin, Stéphane Grappelli, and Tony Williams. Mark was featured in The Four Pianos In Concert series along with pianists Paul Smith, Pete Jolly and Steve Allen.

Mark Massey's debut CD, Acoustic Piano International, has received wide airplay on jazz radio. API featured nine of Mark's original jazz compositions--including Professor M&M's Jive Detector, offered here--inspired by his musical excursions around the globe, along with Eric Stiller (bass) and Aldo Bentivegna (drums), and guest artists Alex Acuña, percussion (Weather Report), Justo Almario, flute (Mongo Santamaria), Plas Johnson, tenor sax (The Pink Panther Theme), Bob Mintzer, soprano sax (The Yellow Jackets), and Ron Stout, flugelhorn,

More recently, Mark has been recording his iconic Jazz Thoughts for the Day albums of original jazz improvisional compositions for each day of the year. Jazz Thoughts for the months of January through July have thus far been released.

COMMENTS FROM MAJOR CRITIC REVIEWS OF MARK MASSEY:

Mark Massey is awfully good. His friendly, lyrical, melodic piano has a sound unto itself, bop and post-bop influenced, contemporarily informed, and languishing solidly in the modern mainstream. ...This is a very good trio that is together in many aspects of jazz expressionism. In larger, more interactive settings, Massey proves he has ideas that work well. ...Massey's talent being exposed is a breakthrough. A majority of jazz listeners should find this a worthwhile purchase, and a keeper.  Recommended.

----MICHAEL G. NASTOS, ALL MUSIC GUIDE (CD review of Acoustic Piano International)

Mark Massey is an excellent straight-ahead pianist who often appears in the L.A. area. ...his playing is consistently appealing. Of the trio numbers, the often-introspective Flowers For Dorothy, the heated Limejuicer Blues, and .

Somthin’ We Did - from the CD SAZZUNK, is a Jazz waltz that opens with a series of graduated contrapuntal building lines and accents that arrive at that special place we call the melody or head. The simplistic message in the melody is contrasted and supported by all the other players in the band, those would be the other things “They Did”  and there is plenty. For the trumpet solo which is transcribed per the CD, each section in the big band play significant roles in providing lots of interest to play off of as a soloist. After restating the melody in the trumpets and saxes with some variation, the composition wraps it up with a unison line at the end to finish strong!

Funky Monkey - from the CD SAZZUNK, starts out with a simple funky groove using horn accents to catch your attention. The head is initially stated by solo trumpet followed by a duet with alto sax on the melody that soon jumps into the musical jungle to have a lot of complex fun getting wrapped up in the complex vines of that oh so unpredictable melodic jungle! Full of riffs and fun lines it returns to the melody with a multi-layered version that wraps up this Funky Monkey line with attitude. The solo/duet per the CD is transcribed.

Composed by Mike Strand. Graduation,Jazz,Wedding. Score and parts. 22 pages. Michael M. Strand #4890111. Published by Michael M. Strand (A0.970736).

By Mike Strand, ASCAP

This is the full score, plus scores for three groups of parts, for a full arrangement of a swing tune for piano, bass, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and two singers.

After the cover, there are 21 pages of music: Ten pages for the full score; four pages for the group of blowing instruments (alto saxophone, B flat trumpet, and trombone); four pages for the piano and bass; and three pages for the two singers.

Grouping the parts in this manner is natural and advantageous for this particular swing composition. These part groupings will help players in a group coordinate with each other from their group score. This is an excellent compromise between everyone working from the full score, and each player having a score with just the player’s individual part.

The audio sample plays the full score.

This product solves a problem that any composer of new jazz music faces: Unlike the popular standards, there aren’t any well-known and often-heard arrangements for a band to emulate. As the composer with only a lead sheet, I would have to convince your band to develop an arrangement from scratch, starting from nothing but the lead sheet!  With so many attractive standard swing tunes to perform, a busy band may hesitate to put extra effort into an unknown tune.

Problem solved!

With this full arrangement of They Came Here to Dance, a band can better see and hear the tune’s full potential. It will be easier for a band to make any modifications to suit its particular mix of musicians and to better fit its style.

With this arrangement, with written score, part group scores and audio sample, it will be as easy as working from the recording and score of a popular standard.

All that’s missing from this arrangement is the percussion, because of the individuality of drummers. The band only needs a skilled jazz drummer to join in easily with this arrangement.

Here are the lyrics to They Came Here to Dance:

1.

You may come here to eat and to drink.

Lots of chins wag, and wine glasses clink.

Well, that’s all good, but here’s what I think:

They came here to dance!

2.

We cats up front have to check our sound mix.

Then they walk in, togged to the bricks.

They have the moves to show off our licks.

They came here to dance!

Bridge – Instrumental section, followed by:

Our band’s in the groove – here’s one reason why:

The doghouse amps are turned up high.

They get in there, and tear up the floor!

And they don’t care if their feet get sore.

3.

Bustin’ our conks, we cats are hot,

She is a wren who rocks him a lot!

And they don’t care if we light up or not.

They came here to dance!

4. Bridge again, then:

Bustin’ our conks, we cats are hot,

She is a wren who rocks him a lot!

And they don’t care if we light up or not.

They have the learning to, they have a yearning to,

They came here to dance!

Note

Some words in these lyrics are taken from Cab Calloway Slang:

Light up – smoke a stick (marijuana cigarette)

Doghouse - bass

Get in there - go to work, get busy, make it hot, give it all you got

Bustin’ our conks – breaking our necks (applying ourselves diligently)

Wren – a chick, a queen (beautiful girl)

Cat – musician in swing band

Togged to the bricks – dressed to kill, from head to toe

Licks – hot musical phrases

In the groove – perfect, down the alley

 .

If you are looking for a swinging addition to your holiday concert repertoire, George West's arrangement on Santa Claus is Comin' to Town is the chart you've been looking for! The melody is stated first by the trumpets, and the trombones take over at the bridge. Tenor sax has the solo, but there is an optional repeat for additional solos. This chart is one of my favorites, and it will have your audience tapping their toes!

Grade: 3
Ranges:

  • Trumpet: D6
  • Trombone: Bb4
