This arrangement is in the style of Basie’s LIL’ DARLIN’…a slow burn. Relaxed, but full of energy. Difficulty: Intermediate. A standard of the Great American Songbook.

Little Big Band- The arrangement is playable with rhythm section (piano/guitar, bass, drums)and 3 to 6 horns. Horns in order of importance: 1st Trumpet (1st Part), Alto Saxophone (2nd Part), Trombone (3rd Part), Tenor Saxophone (4th Part), Baritone Saxophone (5th Part), 2nd Trumpet (6th Part). Includes an optional Vibraphone/Guitar part and alternate parts for the Baritone Saxophone (Trombone), the 2nd Trumpet (Alto Saxophone), and the Trombone (Tenor Saxophone).

After creating a perfectly servicable big band arrangement of No Time To Die, I did what any good arranger of a big band would do and asked myself, How would Maynard Ferguson play this? The answer is, of course, louder, faster, and higher, or otherwise stated, obnoxiously. Such was born this unique version of this piece, with screaming trumpet parts, but a trombone soloing the first verse and then taking an extended improvisional solo throughout the middle (because as the lead trombone player of the band, I opted to give it to myself). I, personally, like this version better than the one that mimics the original, and give a little Bond pep to the midst to your setlist. Enjoy No Time To Die, as performed (obnoxiously) by the T-Town Jazz Band.

George Willson has been an performer, composer, and conductor for thirty years in various mediums and ensembles.

Here is the sheet music from my song “A Song To Sing� which is from my CD “No Tan Lines�. This version was re-purposed from a big band version of mine for a Trumpet solo with 13 trumpets. The 4 Trumpets, 4 Trombones and 5 Saxes were re-voiced into 13 Trumpets with the original rhythm section. The lyrics from the original CD are:

The classic hymn Nearer, My God, to Thee is often used in solemn circumstances, most notably (at least according to rumor) during the sinking of the Titanic. The text, however, captures a balance between solemnity and celebration, suffering and mercy, death and new life. In adapting it for jazz big band, I found myself thinking about New Orleans jazz funeral parades, which also feature that same odd contradiction between grief and joy, through the use of the blues. I won't claim this is in any way authentic New Orleans jazz, but it does try to say some of the same things, and I hope you enjoy it. Written for standard jazz big band, with lots of room for open solos by the blues-inclined. Roughly 6 minutes, longer with additional solos. Show Type Tune Back in 1989 I was taking an arranging course at NEC taught by George Russell (who subsequently received the Genius Grant for Lifetime Achievement). I worked on this big band arrangement for about a year. My concept was to take a Bill Evans tune and harmonize his solo for saxes within the body of the arrangement. About a week before graduation it finally came time for the class to have their work heard. I was SO excited! A big band was assembled and after a few days of classmate’s charts workshopped, George Russell fell ill, and I never got to hear my arrangement. I was devastated. It had taken me months to arrange, and hand-write the 17 parts as back then, no computers of course!So, tearfully it all went into a red folder—and eventually made its way to the bottom of a box, a box that somehow followed me throughout life. Recently concerned about doing nothing all week at family camp—I thought to myself, with my present knowledge of music notation software, why not dig up that dusty red folder and input the chart to finally hear it —32 years later? I figured if the work had any merit I could print it out and bring it to Library Band ! So. in the tiny log cabin with laptop and travel keys, I began, soon falling into what can only be described as timeless awareness—future self collaborating with inner conservatory undergrad—and dare say, I was rather impressed with her 😂 Although a few tweaks needed, the work proved nothing short of a sound effort. Tying up this life-long loose-end feels nothing short of spiritually inspired. �.
