Published by Roger Aldridge (A0.979626). Sleepy Creek Samba (for jazz soloist, 5 wind instruments, and rhythm section) is a bright and happy piece. This samba has an unusual structure. The theme is 18 bars. Importantly, the last 2 bars are intended to sound unresolved, with the ascending major 7th chords, and be a springboard for the soloist. Solos are based on this 18-bar form. After the solos and an ensemble soli (note its use of space), a second theme emerges. This theme has a 12-bar form, with two 6-bar phrases. It merges with 16 bars of the first theme. Finally, a short tag takes the tune out with a surprise ending. The score was originally conceived for woodwind quintet (with alto flute). Alternate parts are provided for an assortment of commonly-used wind instruments. In this way, the piece can be performed by various combinations of instruments. As another possibility, two (or more) musicians can be used on each wind instrument part. This option of having doubled parts -- with either same or different instruments on a part -- is an easy way for larger ensembles to perform this music. The arrangement can be opened up for multiple soloists. Young soloists can improvise very effectively using a g minor blues scale, although the piece is not a blues. It was written for music students at the Sandy Spring Friends School in Maryland. This music has an exuberant spirit with samba rhythms churning under contemporary harmonic voicings. It is intended to be a short piece; however, the vamp at the end can be extended with a solo or collective improvisation. Another option is to have a percussion intro before the horn section enters with the opening chords. While Fanfare was draws upon Brazilian music, it is in my own style. Unlike my other pieces for mid-size ensemble, the rhythm section is optional for Fanfare. In this way, the piece can be performed by woodwind or brass quintets, clarinet ensemble, or sax quartet/quintet as several possibilities. Additionally, it can be easily adapted for big bands and larger ensembles by doubling players on parts so that each line has a distinctive blending of tone colors. This arrangement is a fast moving, swinging chart similar to the Buddy Rich, Woody Herman big bands of the 1960s. It may look like a long arrangement when you first look at the parts but its performance time is 4 min 40 sec. if performed at the metronome marking of 216bpm at the top of the arrangement.  It has featured solos for the 2nd trumpet, tenor sax and trombone as well as a shout section. There are various types of interludes between the choruses which create an interesting change for each section. This is an arrangement that will require above average performers of a university or professional type player to perform. It is truly a showpiece for a jazz ensemble that is at the higher level of performance. A score is also available for this piece.

A single volume was issued in 1926. The last surviving editor of the series died in 1928, and these volumes are now public domain worldwide. They are also held in acclaim because there are no articulation or expression marks in the Gesellshaft. Therefore, the articulation and expression marks written in these arrangements by the arranger are suggestions only. Musicians may perform the works in any manner best suited to the betterment of their own performance.
