D’oh! is as much about word play as it is about the rhythmic melody that uses the solfeggio syllables “mi� and “do� to create a clever musical pun and a tongue-in-cheek expression that reflects a disgruntled response to a sharp and accusative question.  Molded to the swing era this work echoes the style of Glenn Miller as it highlights the good-natured jazzy banter between these musical syllables, emphasizing the different features inherent in each section of the ensemble at different times in the music.  With its compelling momentum, Me? D’oh! is a snappy and light-hearted jazz piece that affords a great opportunity for young ensembles to play more individualized parts and build confidence in playing in the style of the great swing era bands of the 1920s and 1930s.

They drink a local milkshake with sugar and a little native flavouringSarah: What's the name of the flavouring?Sky: Bacardi.Sarah: Doesn't Bacardi have alcohol in it?Sky: Oh, only enough to act as a preservative.Sarah: You know, this would be a wonderful way to get children to drink milk!After a couple of those, she bursts into song. Doris Day had a Top-20 hit with If I Were a Bell in 1950 and many singers have covered it since. Its place as a Jazz Standard was cemented in 1956 on the album Relaxin' with The Miles Davis Quintet.This original arrangement for big band features a solo flute - if not a flute solo - and, at 128 BPM, is slightly slower than usual. It was written in the mid-1990s for the Morley College Jazz Orchestra in London (then directed by Gordon BAP! Rose and Pete Pearl and Dean Moore). The style is in the direction of the understated West-Coast sound (Count Basie/Bill Russo/Bill Holman), with tipsy soli sections and a shout-chorus. The part for second alto OR first tenor is the same, meaning the flautist can be either an alto or tenor player. Well, if I were a salad I know I'd be splashing my dressing.Hic!

The trombone is an oft-neglected melody and solo instrument in the jazz ensemble, and here is a trombone section feature on the melody, with an improvised solo as well for the lead player. The saxes and trumpets also have soli sections, in harmony. The trombone melody is unison. Solo sections are broken up such that one player does the A-A, and another doe the B section and the final A. Sorry, no SampleSolo for the trumpet, but all others have one. The music is a riff on Am-Bb7, with a modal bridge that uses the parallel and relative majors of A minor. A nice little structural element! Rhythm section Uni-Part, Straight-through no D.S. al coda layout, and piano voicings and chord symbols make this as playable and clear for student, recreational, and pro ensembles. Here is a tune in that genre, with the fluegelhorn as the main voice for both the melody and the solo. The alto saxophone has a short solo, and the saxophone section has a segment of the melody as a soli. Fm6 and Gm6 in the A section alternate with E Maj7, D Maj7, and C Maj7 at the bridge to create some nicely contrasting colors and feelings.
