This guitar quartet can be played with any number of parts per player and was written for a group of 12 young guitar players known as RYGO, (Redlynch Youth Guitar Orchestra) to be played on the 1st of January, 2014.
All parts are relatively easy but part they all have challenges as well. The first being to play with a swing against the other parts. There are some cool bits for every part so it's a fun piece for a young ensemble group.

Neil Peart asked me to arrange “YYZ� for the 2008 Buddy Rich Memorial Concert in New York City. Knowing “Rush� fans would be in attendance and super tuned into the chart, we discussed some key moments in the composition that should remain true to the original and those where I could take some license. Like many of my arrangements for Buddy Rich, this is a “high energy� chart that is a real crowd pleaser with plenty of space to open it up for the drums and bass to be featured. Almost any instrument can be substituted for the soprano solo. The chart is very challenging and a strong trumpet section is important as is a really tight rhythm section. Alto 1 plays soprano sax throughout and the configuration is 5 Saxes, 4 Trumpets, 3 Trombones (3rd is Bass), Guitar (optional) Electric Keyboard, Bass & Drums.

The Charlie Parker/Dizzy Gillespie bebop classic, Anthropology, is arranged here in a cool style reminiscent of writers such as Dave Pell. Arranged for nonet, but playable without the guitar and/or vibraphone parts, this treatment features a scat-style vocal atop piano, bass, and drums, with innovative backing figures provided by trumpet, alto sax, and trombone. Vocal is in an ideal key for male and/or female.

Anthropology opens with a bass solo over (brush) drums. The first A features a vocal/vibes melody over a highly syncopated stop-time provided by guitar, bass, and drums. Horns enter in gliding unison figures, spreading into harmony, and provide lots of punch and counterpoint as the chart progresses. By way of metric modulation, an Afro-Cuban vamp is an inventive send off for each improvising soloist. The chart concludes with in an across-the-barline rhythmic style style of writing over a satisfying harmonic sequence to wrap it all up.

Started writing a blues tune with the unimaginative titles of Clever Title Here when I put the question out to the band to give up some title ideas, and I'd take my favorite. Well, when our 2nd Alto, GIna, suggested Somewhere To Be, my mind conjured the animation from Rhapsody in Blue from Fantasia 2000. I could hear the rushing around to get out of house to your destination, and I knew that was the winner.
