Composed by Roger Aldridge. Contemporary,Jazz. Score and parts. 10 pages. Roger Aldridge #441219. Published by Roger Aldridge (A0.979653).

Shifting time funk (for 5 wind instruments and rhythm section)! The title expresses my disdain for contending with monster SUVs when driving on Connecticut Avenue in Washington, DC. As I envision this music, it is funky and adventurous. The piece is a minimalist composition -- the melody is only 16 bars. However, it has expanded improvisation concepts for the soloist and the ensemble. The ensemble's collective improvisation is to sound like music coming out of car windows in traffic. The sounds change quickly. Different kinds of music come, go, and overlap. Radios (or electronics) may be used for additional layers of sound. The soloists use four chord progression patterns. Each soloist determines which patterns to play and their sequence. The patterns can be played in any order. Ideally, the patterns are determined within a performance instead of before. The soloist communicates the patterns, and when to shift to a new pattern, to the ensemble by hand signals. The ensemble (including horn players) can improvise backgrounds and interactions with the soloist. Music styles can also shift within a solo. Performers can take the music in any creative direction they want to go with it. Note: There are differences between the score and the demo recording. The small group recording was made (from a lead sheet) several years before my mid-size ensemble score was written. For this new recording, the horn parts from my score were added to the earlier recording. The video syncs the pages of the score with the recording as closely as possible.

By Grover Washington Jr. By Grover Washington Jr. Arranged by Mike Michalicek and Gerald Ramsey. Jazz,Soul. 60 pages. Gerald Ramsey #973223. Published by Gerald Ramsey (A0.1389644).

Grover Washington, Jr., recorded this composition on his Winelight album with a stellar rhythm section of Richard Tee, Rhodes piano; Eric Gale, guitar; Marcus Miller, bass; Steve Gadd, drums; and Ralph MacDonald, percussion. Despite the subtitle, this piece is not a samba, but rather a soulful solo vehicle for Grover and members of the rhythm section.

This arrangement is written flexibly so that it could be performed by a full big band, by solo alto sax with rhythm section, or by big band with a featured alto soloist. The arrangement can be opened up for multiple soloists. Young soloists can improvise very effectively using a g minor blues scale, although the piece is not a blues. More advanced players can use the provided sheets with the chord changes transposed for each instrument.

The MIDI-rendered recording provides an adequate representation of this arrangement, but check out Groverâ??s recording on the streaming platform of your choice for an outstanding model to emulate.

Composed by Benny Carter. Arranged by Peter Stöve. 20th Century,Jazz. Score and parts. 76 pages. Peter Stove #729548. Published by Peter Stove (A0.1129024).

Peter Stöve ‘What If Benny Goodman…’ series, Vol. 1! (A take-off on events that could have happened with the Benny Goodman Orchestra’s book of arrangements if things in jazz history had taken another turn). What if Benny Carter had not sailed for Europe in 1935 to become staff arranger with the BBC, but instead had helped out Benny Goodman with providing scores for his ‘Let’s Dance’ program? And suppose Carter had done the same trick that Fletcher Henderson pulled later on, e.g. adapting already existing scores of his own band for the Benny Goodman Orchestra? Carter’s ‘Symphony In Riffs’ is presented here as a piece that could have been a cornerstone of the Goodman band library. The sax soli written by Carter is there, but the clarinet dominates the second strain in a Glenn Miller-styled section, and of course later with an extended solo. Other soloists include trb 1, piano, tpt 2 and ts 1. The two different strains are juxtaposed to each other, to make for a maximum of variety. Scored for the line-up of the Benny Goodman Orchestra of 1935: solo clt/2 as/2 ts/3 tpt/2 trb/rhy. Tpt 1 to Eb3. Difficult for multiple reasons: • The clarinet soloist must be a first-class ‘BG-wannabe’. Fluent soloist, comfortable in the upper register. • Strong lead-alto required, with an old-skool ‘singing’ tone. • Lead trumpet must be able to ‘carry off’ the final section from bar 197 onwards. • Driving rhythm section needed; swinging (preferably acoustic) rhythm guitarist and a bassist who doesn’t shy away from playing compelling bass-lines. If your band meets these requirements: have fun!

Composed by Roger Aldridge. CSIC Library Series. Contemporary,Jazz,Rock. Score and parts. 17 pages. Roger Aldridge #1989671. Published by Roger Aldridge (A0.979671).

Baltimore Rowhouse (for jazz soloist, 5 wind instruments, and rhythm section) is an extended piece with dramatic changes in mood and style. It begins as a ballad featuring alto sax, suddenly shifts to rock-fusion guitar, and finally has a film noir flavor. Serial techniques are used in subtle ways throughout the score and provide compositional structure. The piece strikes a balance between notation and improvisational freedom for both the soloists and the ensemble musicians. The score was originally conceived for woodwind quintet (with alto flute). Alternate parts are provided for an assortment of commonly-used wind instruments. In this way, the piece can be performed by many combinations of instruments. As another possibility, two (or more) musicians can be used on each wind instrument part. This option of having doubled parts -- with either same or different instruments on a part -- is an easy way for larger ensembles to perform this music.

By Nat King Cole. By Eden Ahbez. Arranged by R.J. Becker. Funk,Jazz. Score and Parts. 42 pages. R.J.Becker #855482. Published by R.J.Becker (A0.1262440).

MML

This title needs no further explanation. R.J. Becker arranged it for SMALL BIG BAND, featuring the 1st (Solo) Trumpet. He chose a medium slow funky groove. It is worth noting that the arranger added a 9th bar in the melody part, while keeping the original 8 bars in the improvisational part. This arrangement is a wonderful alternative to the original and demands an elegant interpretation of the melody, proper improvisation and stamina from the soloist to the final chord.
(Absolutely confident lead trumpeters might even dare to present the final melody part (beginning with the upbeat to bar 61) an octave higher...)
Soloists: 1st Trumpet / Piano (Keyboard).

Have A Good One is a track from the bop quartet CD Guided Tour. WINNER of the 2014 SMP/ Hal Leonard Publishing Contest for Best Jazz Combo submission. The piece is a Charlie Parker-Style blues with a modal bridge. After the theme, a short tutti leads to a series of solos with backgrounds for various saxes and brass, finishing with a full ensemble chorus out. The chart can be opened up for additional solos if desired. GateWay Editions Jazz Ensemble Series titles feature SampleSolos for most improvisational sections, so your band can learn to play the section material AND blow on changes at the same time. Each soloist's part is included without the sample as well, for the experienced player. All charts are straight through, with no D.S.'s back to the top or awkward pageturns. A rhythm section Uni-Part comes with each chart, which the optional guitar, bass, piano and even drums can play from! Drumset parts are fully notated versions of the MIDI audio clips. Piano voicings AND chord symbols are provided. Running time without additional soloists is approx. 5 mins 30 secs. Brass ranges are conservative at both the high and low ends. A low-A baritone sax is NEVER required for any GateWay Editions Jazz Ensemble Series chart. MBB  2014 Labor of Love Contest Winner.

By Wayne Shorter. By Wayne Shorter. Arranged by Alberto Mandarini. 20th Century,Contemporary,Contest,Festival,Jazz,Standards. 47 pages. Alm@music #1083972. Published by Alm@music (A0.1509330).

Jazz Ensemble / Big Band
- Grade 3.5

Instrumentation: Full Score; Alto Sax 1; Alto Sax 2; Tenor Sax 1; Tenor Sax 2; Baritone Sax; Trumpet 1; Trumpet 2; Trumpet 3; Trumpet 4; Trombone 1; Trombone 2; Trombone 3; Bass Trombone; Guitar; Piano; Bass; Drums.

With the arrangement of Wayne Shorter's Infant Eves, I officially start the series dedicated to the most typical orchestral ensemble in jazz: the Big Band.

The instrumentation is the traditional one: 5 saxophones, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones and rhythm section (guitar, piano, double bass and drums).

After a brief introduction, in which the double bass moves freely over an orchestral accompaniment, the exposition of the initial part of theme A is entrusted to the first trombone, followed by the saxophone section and then the trumpet section (B).

This all flows into the last section of the theme (C), in a robust brass ensemble to which the saxophones respond with simple counterpoint phrases.

The last four bars, again entrusted to the saxophones, gradually lead us to the solo section.

The latter is developed over a chorus and a half, and each of the soloists is given one of the four sections (A, B, C, A): the first is by the first trombone (the arrangement's main soloist), the second by the first alto saxophone, while the third features the orchestra in a short nine-bar special, where the three sections chase and chase each other.

The final solo part is then entrusted to the second trumpet, which gives way to the orchestra for the reprise of the remaining two sections of the theme as well as the inevitable coda.

Altogether, the arrangement spans three complete choruses, plus the introduction and coda, for a total duration of just under seven minutes.

I hope you enjoy this arrangement and, as always, I wish you

Good Music!!!

am.

Composed by Roger Aldridge. 20th Century,Contemporary,Jazz. Score and parts. 9 pages. Roger Aldridge #484937. Published by Roger Aldridge (A0.979662).

This composition for 5 wind instruments and soloist explores interplay between structure and freedom. It is based on an 11-tone harmonic complex and a series of tonal effects providing backgrounds to, and interactions with, the soloist. The role of the soloist is entirely improvised. The soloist can conceivably be any instrument. Additionally, the soloist does not have to be limited to one musician. It can be expanded to multiple musicians -- up to the size of a small band (any genre). Any creative possibility can be explored. I envision this composition as being a framework for a collective creative process to take place between the soloist, conductor, and ensemble with each interacting with the others. In this way, the score is a point of departure for wherever the musicians want to take the music.

PARTS: Smaller Ups And Downs does not have a set of parts. Since this piece is instruction-based and has minimal music notation, performers use individual copies of the concert pitch score and transpose their notes.

Composed by Roger Aldridge. Contemporary,Jazz,World. Score and parts. 11 pages. Roger Aldridge #119381. Published by Roger Aldridge (A0.979627).

New Tango No. 1: Movement (for jazz soloist, 5 wind instruments, and rhythm section) is an abstract piece. Inspired by the tango, it invokes dance movement as well as explores movement in and out of time in the music. The soloist's part is entirely improvised. The rhythm section goes between time and free-time. The soloist cues the rhythm section on when to make time and harmonic changes. The background ensemble is in free-time with each note conducted. During solos the background ensemble can improvise interactions with the soloist. This piece is highly dependent upon the soloist and ensemble to bring the music to life and take the audience on a journey. Space and understatement are important features of this music. The open, floating free-time melody and the space between its phrases enable the rhythm section to have a prominent role in playing layers of lines, textures, and colors. Using accordion and guitar (along with piano, bass, and drums) is highly recommended. A string instrument(s) such as violin or cello can improvise additional layers with the rhythm section. One of my essential concepts in this piece is for the ensemble to have the sound of a tango band (as closely as possible); however, the music has a great amount of freedom. The score was originally conceived for woodwind quintet (with alto flute). Alternate parts are provided for an assortment of commonly-used wind instruments. In this way, the piece can be performed by various combinations of instruments. As another possibility, two (or more) musicians can be used on each wind instrument part. This option of having doubled parts -- with either same or different instruments on a part -- is an easy way for larger ensembles to perform this music.

Thank you for considering this arrangement! The catchy melody and triplet feel will provide many opportunities for growth in your developing jazz ensemble.

Listening to recordings of the tune is a must for emulating the style of the piece. Two good reference recordings are found on the following albums:

Night Train - Jimmy Forrest

Grey's Mood Al Grey (w/ Jimmy Forrest)

There's also a terrific Youtube video of Jimmy Forrest performing it with the Count Basie Orchestra.

This chart can be done with the following instrumentation: Altos 1 + 2, Tenor 1, Bari, Trumpets 1-2, Trombones 1-2, Piano, Bass, and Drums. If you'd like me to make parts for other instruments (flute, horn, etc.), please reach out to me.

I couldn't think of too many blues heads that'd be able to teach two essential jazz concepts (the blues and slow swing feel) that would be as catchy and as fun as Night Train. Your kids will be playing this tune a lot in the band room!

Whenever chord symbols are present, bass players can make up their own bass lines and guitarists/pianists their own voicings. This chart's slow tempo and familiar harmonic structure can provide young players with a bridge to developing their own improvised bass lines and comping skills.

The plunger work in the beginning is fun, but not required (in case you don't trust middle school students with plungers :))

If your rhythm section players need easier or harder parts, let me know and I'm happy to provide.

Feel free to add additional soloists if desired. The trombone solo can be repeated for additional soloists.

Enjoy Night Train!

Composed by Kurt Schulenburg. Blues,Jazz. Score and parts. 48 pages. Kurt Schulenburg #6565335. Published by Kurt Schulenburg (A0.505159).

This is a slow start in the morning sort of blues, meant to be played like the coffee hasn't quite kicked in. It's a simple blues in Concert F (despite the key signature where I've added that flatted seventh!) and is a great vehicle for developing young soloists - or pushing those with more experience to new highs! The mp3 is just a MuseScore3 export, nothing fancy, but it gives you an idea of what to expect. I've not included any solos, making this a good mp3 to give to your soloists to play along with. It's not too tough, should be playable by many advanced grade school and all high school bands - and it's scored to sound good even with pro groups.
