Grover Washington, Jr., recorded this composition on his Winelight album with a stellar rhythm section of Richard Tee, Rhodes piano; Eric Gale, guitar; Marcus Miller, bass; Steve Gadd, drums; and Ralph MacDonald, percussion. Despite the subtitle, this piece is not a samba, but rather a soulful solo vehicle for Grover and members of the rhythm section.This arrangement is written flexibly so that it could be performed by a full big band, by solo alto sax with rhythm section, or by big band with a featured alto soloist. The arrangement can be opened up for multiple soloists. Young soloists can improvise very effectively using a g minor blues scale, although the piece is not a blues. Chick Corea recorded Samba Song on his 1978 Friends album with saxophonist Joe Farrell, bassist Eddie Gómez, and drummer Steve Gadd.  Woody Herman recorded a fantastic John Fedchock arrangment of Samba Song on his 1987 Woody's Gold Star album that unfortunately was never published.This challenging Fedchock-inspired arrangement features a sax soli, followed by two solo sections that can spotlight any instruments, and ends with an in-tempo drum solo.  Any of the solo sections can be cut or extended as desired to make the piece as short or long as desired.  True to the original Corea version, a 6-bar hemiola section toward the beginning will keep everyone on their toes.  The top lead trumpet note is a written E6.
