It was his first solo hit after leaving the Dominoes and, over the years, has become one of his biggest international chart successes.The song was written by Berry Gordy, Gwen Gordy Fuqua, and Wilson's cousin Roquel Billy Davis (though credited under his pseudonym Tyran Carlo on the record) and produced by Dick Jacobs, and its title was taken from the Louis Jordan song Reet, Petite and Gone. The theme is 18 bars. Importantly, the last 2 bars are intended to sound unresolved, with the ascending major 7th chords, and be a springboard for the soloist. Solos are based on this 18-bar form. After the solos and an ensemble soli (note its use of space), a second theme emerges. This theme has a 12-bar form, with two 6-bar phrases. It merges with 16 bars of the first theme. Finally, a short tag takes the tune out with a surprise ending. The score was originally conceived for woodwind quintet (with alto flute). Alternate parts are provided for an assortment of commonly-used wind instruments. In this way, the piece can be performed by various combinations of instruments. As another possibility, two (or more) musicians can be used on each wind instrument part. This option of having doubled parts -- with either same or different instruments on a part -- is an easy way for larger ensembles to perform this music.
