It has an optional vocal,( cued in for alto sax) that should be sung thru a megaphone like the old Winchester Cathedral. The title comes from a pattern of speech found only in Chicago where people still say over by here and over by there. It swings well and invites a couple tambourines playing on 2 and 4. This is a fun chart but is very correct musically even if you expect the Blues Brothers to show up when it’s played. It can be opened for solos if needed. Don’t get too serious about the vocal, it’s best with your worst singer, maybe with a clothes-pin on his nose.   Enjoy it with your audience.If you want a Maynard or Buddy chart, look elsewhere. This series of charts uses nothing more complicated than eighth notes, are not frantic or screamers, extreme ranges and are hemi-demi-semi-quaver free. They depend on intonation and the players being not intimidated by what he is asked to play. There is no contest to see how high you can go before you need oxygen , how many notes you can play in 9 seconds or before your bell overheats , or how long it takes the audience to cover their earsRelaxed and confident players always play more in tune. Good harmonies, lines and realistic rhythm patterns will produce a good result that will swing and be enjoyed by player and listener alike.

My mom wrote this poem in 2007 when she was going through chemotherapy to treat her breast cancer. She was reminiscing about a day when her grandsons Ian (7) and Zachary (4) had accompanied her with bongo drums, maracas and tambourines as she played her Yamaha Clavinova to a latin beat. She said it was so much fun and they had such a good time! From her poem I have created a song that tries to capture the essence of their experience. I incorporated little variations of When the Saints go Marching in to portray their jam session while also alluding to my mom as a Saint who will always be with us in spirit no matter what. When she marches into Heaven I am sure she will be asking Jesus what he wants for dinner. :) For every purchase of this song I will donate $1 to Breast Cancer Charities of America.

C. It offers students an opportunity to explore the odd meters he commonly used to formulate many of his works, only on an easier level for advanced middle school and high school players. Audiences will also enjoy this diversion from the typical meters used in most jazz arrangements. Although scored for full jazz ensemble, the arrangement will work for smaller groups that do not have the full instrumentation. Auxiliary cow bell and tambourine parts will add to the flavor that was so commonly used during this era of pop music. Try to get the70’s flavor by using as close to an organ sound as possible, but a piano may be substituted. .
