Many have remarked on the big historical shift: musicians used to apprentice on the road with masters and learn the language firsthand, but those cultural conditions are fading, and the bandstand has been replaced by the graduate degree. There’s truth in that narrative, and yet it fails to account for the full variety of paths that players are taking as they strive to find their voice in this music.For alto saxophonist Christopher Burnett, the journey involved spending 22 years as a musician in the U.S. Army. He left the service in 1996 - I’ve been out nearly as long as I was in, he says - and resettled in 2001 in his native Kansas City metropolitan area. Two years earlier, in 1999, he had released his debut recording, Time Flies, and in 2008 he followed up with Theme Music, both on the Artists Recording Collective (ARC) label that he cofounded with saxophonist Erica Lindsay and pianist Sumi Tonooka. Now at age 58, Burnett reaches another level of achievement with Firebird, showcasing a fine working quartet and a set of compositions rich in beauty, subtlety and sophistication. There’s a remarkable lyrical ease and harmonic savvy in the compositions that make up Firebird, not least of all on the title track with its layered flutes and Latin-tinged rhythmic feel. Burnett’s legato eloquence and depth of expression on the slow 4/4 Ballad for An Optimist is another highlight. His choice of the inspired, metrically shifting A Risk I Take, by French horn virtuoso and colleague Mark Taylor, tells us much about his refined taste and interpretive abilities. With all the bird titles floating around out there from Birdland, Lullaby of Birdland, Yardbird, Foo Birds, Free Bird, and even The Chicken, I figured what with my being from Broken Arrow (the home of the annual Rooster Days festival), it was high time there was a song involving the rooster. Called Night of the Rooster, this was a cross between the Stray Cat Strut and James Bond, and one can only imagine the rooster's evening in the hen house. Without going into innuendos, the way the T-Town Jazz Band performed it was with all trombone improv solos ending with all four of us playing at once. Whether this was measuring slide lengths or a battle between roosters, you can let your imagination run wild. It boiled down to a fun ltitle blues piece that wasn't too difficult to get into in any case, and we even have the recording linked to prove it.

This Charlie Parker bebop standard has been made accessible to young jazz ensembles. The open solo section is for any player and utilizes a two-chord vamp rather than the original complex song form. A beginner can improvise on this chart!

And it's all to a hip hop groove, which has strong elements of swing. This stylistic hook, along with flexible scoring and a user friendly solo section make this chart a great way to introduce young musicians to Bird.

Although it is scored for a full jazz ensemble, it can be performed by as little as one upper instrument (alto sax or trumpet) and one lower instrument (tenor sax, bari sax or trombone). 

Parts are included for flute, F horn, and tuba.

ON THE BUS is an original composition for big band and featured as a set piece for the 2001 Australian Academy Festival of Music Jiants of Jazz Ensemble division. This is one of the first pieces I composed and arranged for big band and is based on the chord changes of Charlie Parker's Yardbird Suite.  I composed the tune in the late 1980's when, as a student, I was listening to a lot of Bird and Miles and spending a lot of time catching buses!   The original arrangement was done for the Queensland Youth Big Band and has been somewhat revised for this version.  

The head features an Alto Sax 1/Trumpet 2 soli supported with some rhythmic and melodic stabs from the ensemble.  Space is provided in the chart for solos from Alto Sax1, Trumpet 2 and Piano.  The chorus beginning at measure 75 features a brass section unison soli passage, composed of some of my favourite Bird and Miles licks.  This provides a challenge for the brass players to keep this section tight and swinging.  Fully notated rhythm section parts have been included to assist less experienced players.

Bye Bye Blackbird has now been arranged for big band as a Bembe! There's reharmonization, fun timbral colors among the ensemble, lots of power, and lots of triplets. There are solo vamps for trombone and trumpet, which are meant to be improvised very freely. Make sure your saxophones can double flutes and bass clarinet as well!

My current Jazz combo is called 'Simply Swing'. We play music principally for dancing or as background music for dinners, the life-blood type music that has been the staple diet for 'gigging musicians' for centuries... right back to the minstrel galleries of the 14th Century.
