This tune is an original of mine from the 5th and B catalog, a group with Dave Storrs and more.  I wrote this shortly after a gig at a local place called Squirrel's where a young woman through a pickle from upstairs.  She was aiming for her boyfriend but the rascal managed to avoid her attack, whereby the pickle continued its angry trajectory and hit me rather harmlessly in the shoulder. We were on a band break at the time.  The pickle was a mystery.  Who had thrown it?  Or was it some sort of magical pickle?  The mystery was resolved when the young lady heard the band was talking about the amazing pickle and tracked me down to apologize. No harm!  And I was inspired to write this little ditty! .

Here is a tune in that genre, with the fluegelhorn as the main voice for both the melody and the solo. The alto saxophone has a short solo, and the saxophone section has a segment of the melody as a soli. Fm6 and Gm6 in the A section alternate with E Maj7, D Maj7, and C Maj7 at the bridge to create some nicely contrasting colors and feelings. Chord symbols AND written-out voicings are provided for ALL the piano parts in the GEJES book.The rhythm section Uni-Part can be played by an optional guitar, piano, bass, and even the drums! The saxophone section needs flute, clarinet and bass clarinet, with only one alto and one tenor sax. The solo trumpet part is quite easy, spanning one octave; f-f'. The written-out jazz solo is not as difficult as it looks but nevertheless a bit more challenging. An easier solo can be written or improvised to be as difficult as the player dares, or given to someone else. The level is on the easier side of intermediate. Kids' Song was written in the mid- 1990s, apparently after listening to a lot of Isaac Hayes as an antidote to the then-ubiquitous Britpop and EDM. The style is a bit commercial and unashamedly schmaltzy - as you might find in a Broadway show from the time. The harmonies are like recently-poured cornflakes; slushy but slightly crunchy in places - and there's a funky middle section, as if you've mashed in a banana with maple syrup and Tabasco on it or something. Kids' Song was conceived as part of the obscure musical about the fortunes of a banjo-playing flapper from Burnley, Fifi Braithwaite, but dropped for stylistic reasons because the show was set in the late 1920s/ early 1930s. The sentiment is We're hungry. Why can't adults just be nice?.
