By Billie Eilish. By Billie Eilish O'Connell and Finneas O'Connell. Arranged by George Willson. 21st Century,Film/TV,Jazz,Rock. Score and Parts. 59 pages. George Willson #835873. Published by George Willson (A0.1240490).

As performed by the T-Town Jazz Band.

After creating a perfectly servicable big band arrangement of No Time To Die, I did what any good arranger of a big band would do and asked myself, How would Maynard Ferguson play this? The answer is, of course, louder, faster, and higher, or otherwise stated, obnoxiously. Such was born this unique version of this piece, with screaming trumpet parts, but a trombone soloing the first verse and then taking an extended improvisional solo throughout the middle (because as the lead trombone player of the band, I opted to give it to myself). I, personally, like this version better than the one that mimics the original, and give a little Bond pep to the midst to your setlist. Enjoy No Time To Die, as performed (obnoxiously) by the T-Town Jazz Band.

Composed by George Willson. Blues,Jazz. Score and parts. 46 pages. George Willson #6359467. Published by George Willson (A0.927181).

Written for the T-Town Jazz Band and named for a Tulsa landmark, this is a big band swing tune in F minor blues with solos and exposure aplenty most notably in the third trombone part. The piece follows a chap who is happily walking (or jaunting) down Cherry Street. Three other guys come in and pick up his melody as a unison trio. This moves into a quick verse in the ensemble before the four players each take a solo turn almost like a combo. The party then takes off with the full band before it moves back to the trio wandering off while crowd bids them farewell and the original soloist takes a final turn. The reason there is such a focus on the third trombone is because this piece is dedicated to Dale Turner who was the third trombone player in the T-Town Jazz Band and a founding member of the band. We tried to get him to improv a solo here and there, but he wouldn't do it. We figured if we wrote it into his part, he would play it, and so the next piece I was writing was Cherry Street Jaunt, so the 3rd trombone got a lot of love. Unfortunately, the band had to shut down for a time due to COVID-19, and during that time, Dale passed due to complications from it. As a result, he never saw the part I wrote to trick him into a solo. The MP3 is generated from the composition program, but the video link is a live performance.

With all the bird titles floating around out there from Birdland, Lullaby of Birdland, Yardbird, Foo Birds, Free Bird, and even The Chicken, I figured what with my being from Broken Arrow (the home of the annual Rooster Days festival), it was high time there was a song involving the rooster. Called Night of the Rooster, this was a cross between the Stray Cat Strut and James Bond, and one can only imagine the rooster's evening in the hen house. Without going into innuendos, the way the T-Town Jazz Band performed it was with all trombone improv solos ending with all four of us playing at once. Whether this was measuring slide lengths or a battle between roosters, you can let your imagination run wild. It boiled down to a fun ltitle blues piece that wasn't too difficult to get into in any case, and we even have the recording linked to prove it.

The Center Of The Universe is a a landmark in downtown Tulsa that is a bit of broken pavement on a bridge across some railroad tracks. Where its name comes from is the unusual acoustic properties that one experiences when standing on top of that broken pavement. Those outside the circle can't hear what the person is saying, and when speaking, the person in the circle can hear their voice echoed back to them. Scientifically, it is said to be its unique position in relation to the nearby buildings of downtown, but even so, it has become a strange tourist attraction.

To exemplify these strange acoustic properties, this big band piece is written in an unusual time signature for the blues: 5/4. That, in itself, makes it inherently difficult to play since most jazz musicians are tuned into 4/4 with the occasional 3/4 or 12/8 thrown in for variety. Yes, others have done it, but this adds another entry to that very short list of big bands tunes in 5 to make us think of that weird spot downtown where sound just doesn't behave the way it seems like it should.
