Jazz Ensemble - Digital Download SKU: AX.00-PR-0002616 Score. Composed by Benny Carter. Instructional. Score. 32 pages. Alfred Music - Digital Sheet Music #00-PR-0002616. Published by Alfred Music - Digital Sheet Music (AX.00-PR-0002616). UPC: 038081331973.Symphony In Riffs is Benny Carter's most famous piece. Originally composed and arranged in the 1930's for 4 reeds and 5 brass, Benny re-scored this version for a larger band some 50 years later. Benny was known for his idiomatic saxophone writing and this chart is a great example of that. Just when you think that the soli chorus at D is as good as his saxophone writing can get, he modulates and tops it with the brilliant new section at I. This is a transitional piece between the pre-swing of the 1920s and the mid-1930s swing.

Jazz Ensemble - Digital Download SKU: AX.00-PR-0004481 Score. Composed by Benny Carter. Instructional. Score. 16 pages. Alfred Music - Digital Sheet Music #00-PR-0004481. Published by Alfred Music - Digital Sheet Music (AX.00-PR-0004481). UPC: 038081331959.Even when Benny Carter wasn't writing for Count Basie, many of his charts from the 1950's onward sound like they could have been written for Basie. Maybe this is because so many of Basie's arrangers (Sammy Nestico, Quincy Jones, Billy Byers and Neal Hefti) were influenced by Carter. The writing is straightforward, with simple harmonies, swinging rhythms and very clear counterpoint. Again And Again has much of the style of an alto feature that Quincy Jones might have written for Marshall Royal. Although Carter gives the pianist two little solo spots, the focus is on the lead alto. The backgrounds are spare and dry, so it is incumbent upon the soloist to supply the warmth and personality to tell this gentle story. Vibrato, scoops, bends, turns, and other devices can be used to bring this simple line to life.

Jazz Ensemble Jazz Ensemble - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.844242 By Charlie Parker. By Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Arranged by Gerhard Guter. Jazz. Score and parts. 31 pages. Gerhard Guter #3885091. Published by Gerhard Guter (A0.844242). The Charlie Parker/Dizzy Gillespie bebop classic, Anthropology, is arranged here in a cool style reminiscent of writers such as Dave Pell. Arranged for nonet, but playable without the guitar and/or vibraphone parts, this treatment features a scat-style vocal atop piano, bass, and drums, with innovative backing figures provided by trumpet, alto sax, and trombone. Vocal is in an ideal key for male and/or female.Anthropology opens with a bass solo over (brush) drums. The first A features a vocal/vibes melody over a highly syncopated stop-time provided by guitar, bass, and drums. Horns enter in gliding unison figures, spreading into harmony, and provide lots of punch and counterpoint as the chart progresses. By way of metric modulation, an Afro-Cuban vamp is an inventive send off for each improvising soloist. The chart concludes with in an across-the-barline rhythmic style style of writing over a satisfying harmonic sequence to wrap it all up.Complete instrumentation:Vocal (male and/or female), Trumpet, Alto Sax, Trombone, Vibes (optional), Guitar (optional), PianoBass, DrumsRanges: G5 trumpet, A4 trombone Demo performed, produced, and programmed by Gerhard Guter .

Jazz Ensemble Jazz Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1225387 Composed by Dave Kenney. Arranged by Dave Kenney. 21st Century,Classical,Jazz. Score and Parts. 23 pages. Davekenneymusic #821463. Published by davekenneymusic (A0.1225387). My energetic saxophone quartet (soprano, alto, tenor and baritone),â€All In†is a jazz piece that was inspired by Jimmy Giuffre’s  “Four Brothers†and all of the other great big band arrangers.   From them I learned so much about writing for the saxophone quartet in particular block chording. Further I did not score it for 3 tenors (or 1 alto 2 tenors) and bari and did not use the chord changes to Jeepers Creepers. I did enjoy creating colorful counterpoint and harmonies and tried to keep it in a light style like the Four Brothers recording.   While I did not include any improvisation it could be added perhaps using the chords from Jeepers Creepers.  All of this should make for challenging but enjoyable playing.  Note: all parts and the score are transposed in one pdf file. trt: 2’ 24 “ this work is: copyright 2023davekenneymusic I would love to get comments from you.Be Well Dave Kenneydavekenneymusic@gmail.com

Jazz Ensemble Jazz Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.927181 Composed by George Willson. Blues,Jazz. Score and parts. 46 pages. George Willson #6359467. Published by George Willson (A0.927181). Written for the T-Town Jazz Band and named for a Tulsa landmark, this is a big band swing tune in F minor blues with solos and exposure aplenty most notably in the third trombone part. The piece follows a chap who is happily walking (or jaunting) down Cherry Street. Three other guys come in and pick up his melody as a unison trio. This moves into a quick verse in the ensemble before the four players each take a solo turn almost like a combo. The party then takes off with the full band before it moves back to the trio wandering off while crowd bids them farewell and the original soloist takes a final turn. The reason there is such a focus on the third trombone is because this piece is dedicated to Dale Turner who was the third trombone player in the T-Town Jazz Band and a founding member of the band. We tried to get him to improv a solo here and there, but he wouldn't do it. We figured if we wrote it into his part, he would play it, and so the next piece I was writing was Cherry Street Jaunt, so the 3rd trombone got a lot of love. Unfortunately, the band had to shut down for a time due to COVID-19, and during that time, Dale passed due to complications from it. As a result, he never saw the part I wrote to trick him into a solo. The MP3 is generated from the composition program, but the video link is a live performance.
