Jazz Ensemble Jazz Ensemble - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.734917 By Jackie Wilson. By Berry Gordy and Billy Davis. Arranged by Joseph Hasper. Contemporary. Score and parts. 26 pages. Joseph Hasper #5033973. Published by Joseph Hasper (A0.734917). Jackie Wilson's biggest hit made available for Little Big Band: vocal solo, 2 alto saxes, tenor sax, trombone, guitar, piano, bass, and drums. Optional section for a sax solo. Background vocals cued in the horn parts. Key of D major. Includes a full score and complete set of parts.Reet Petite (The Sweetest Girl in Town) (originally subtitled The Finest Girl You Ever Want to Meet) is a song made popular by Jackie Wilson. It was his first solo hit after leaving the Dominoes and, over the years, has become one of his biggest international chart successes. The song was written by Berry Gordy, Gwen Gordy Fuqua, and Wilson's cousin Roquel Billy Davis (though credited under his pseudonym Tyran Carlo on the record) and produced by Dick Jacobs, and its title was taken from the Louis Jordan song Reet, Petite and Gone. It was Jackie Wilson's first recording as a solo artist. The song peaked at #62 on the Billboard Hot 100 in September 1957 and reached #6 on the UK Singles Chart. With the success of the song, Gordy was able to fund the launch of Motown Records. The song was reissued in 1986 following the showing of a clay animation video on the BBC Two documentary series Arena. The video was directed by Giblets, a London-based animation studio. The reissued version proved so popular that in December 1986, almost three years after Wilson's death, the song became a No. 1 in the UK for four weeks (selling over 700,000 copies), some 29 years after its chart debut. -- Wikipedia

STUDIO RECORDING NOTES The provided MP3 Audio Clip contains an excerpt of the commercial recording and features: Christopher Burnett – alto saxophone/composition; Roger Wilder – piano; Jeff Harshbarger – bass; Clarence Smith – drums; with Terri Anderson Burnett and Freda Proctor – flutes. The final mastering and mix by Craig Rettmer at C.R. Sound in Kansas City is truly amazing. ABOUT THE COMPOSER How are jazz careers made? Many have remarked on the big historical shift: musicians used to apprentice on the road with masters and learn the language firsthand, but those cultural conditions are fading, and the bandstand has been replaced by the graduate degree. There’s truth in that narrative, and yet it fails to account for the full variety of paths that players are taking as they strive to find their voice in this music. For alto saxophonist Christopher Burnett, the journey involved spending 22 years as a musician in the U.S. Army. He left the service in 1996 - I’ve been out nearly as long as I was in, he says - and resettled in 2001 in his native Kansas City metropolitan area. Two years earlier, in 1999, he had released his debut recording, Time Flies, and in 2008 he followed up with Theme Music, both on the Artists Recording Collective (ARC) label that he cofounded with saxophonist Erica Lindsay and pianist Sumi Tonooka. Now at age 58, Burnett reaches another level of achievement with Firebird, showcasing a fine working quartet and a set of compositions rich in beauty, subtlety and sophistication. There’s a remarkable lyrical ease and harmonic savvy in the compositions that make up Firebird, not least of all on the title track with its layered flutes and Latin-tinged rhythmic feel. Burnett’s legato eloquence and depth of expression on the slow 4/4 Ballad for An Optimist is another highlight. His choice of the inspired, metrically shifting A Risk I Take, by French horn virtuoso and colleague Mark Taylor, tells us much about his refined taste and interpretive abilities. It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing) is a 1931 Duke Ellington composition now accepted as a jazz standard. The music was written and arranged by Ellington in August 1931 during intermissions at Chicago's Lincoln Tavern and was first recorded by Ellington and his orchestra on February 2, 1932. The song became famous, Ellington wrote, as the expression of a sentiment which prevailed among jazz musicians at the time. Probably the first song to use the phrase swing in the title, it introduced the term into everyday language and presaged the swing era by three years. The Ellington band played the song continually over the years and recorded it numerous times, most often with trumpeter Ray Nance as vocalist.

Frederick #647994. Published by P. R. Frederick (A0.1043304). Burn is a hard driving funk style chart scored for jazz band. At a tempo of 130 beats per minute it really does burn. The piece opens with a strong rhythmic figure played by the entire band based on quartal harmony. Then the main melody enters in a soli passage for the saxes. Ist trumpet must be able to hit a Bb above the staff on this one. Room for solos is provided. It would make a great addition to any program. After teaching music in the PA public schools for over thirty years I found that there were never enough good quality, accessible arrangements available. Hopefully this piece will help remedy that situation. This is an original arrangement for a jazz/swing band with standard instrumentation (5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones and rhythm section).See all of my arrangements here

Brad Esbensen Music Services #3537877. Published by Brad Esbensen Music Services (A0.774335). FIX IT AGAIN TONY! is an original composition for big band and featured as a set piece for the 2002 Australian Academy Festival of Music B Grade Jazz Ensemble division. It is a blues in F with a grooving shuffle feel.  In the opening choruses, the big band is divided into three smaller combos playing the head, backing riffs and rhythmic stabs.  Be sure to have the players listen carefully to each other and to be aware of which combo they belong to.  Solo space is provided for the 2nd Trumpet and 1st Trombone players, although this could be opened up to feature other band members. The solo section is followed by a Sax section soli before the head returns to take the chart out.  The inspiration for this title came from my first car - a 1970 FIAT 124 - which provided me with many years of enjoyable motoring.  Any automotive enthusiast will get the joke in this title.www.bemus.com

Jazz Ensemble Jazz Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1317405 By Nat King Cole. By Eden Ahbez. Arranged by Neil Boumpani. Jazz,Latin,Multicultural,Standards,World. 47 pages. Boumpani Music Publishing #906067. Published by Boumpani Music Publishing (A0.1317405). Nature Boy was a number 1 hit for Nat Cole in 1948, and soon became a jazz standard.  Over the years it was also recorded by Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Geroge Benson, and more.  The song, written by Eden Ahbez, was his song about himself.  This Big Band jazz arrangement stays true to the melody, but in a Bossa Nova style.  The song seems to be made for this Latin style.   It allows the band to feature the Flugel Horn, which also fits the dark and brooding mood of the piece.  A trumpet can be substituted.  There are short solos for Tenor Sax and Tronbone, and a Hard-driving Ensemble section before the arrangment returns to the Flugelhorn.   Your drummer should have fun with this- but it is important that the drummer knows how to p0lay the Bossa Bova rhythm, which is written out in the part.
