Big Band: 5 Saxes, 4 Trumpets, 4 Trombones, Rhthym Section

This blues with a swing is suitable for bands of all levels. It opens with a fanfare-like passage for saxes, followed by trumpets and trombones, before getting into the swinging blues groove. After the first two choruses, the opening returns as a bridge passage before the open for solos middle section.

Solos are based on a 12 bar blues pattern and should be 24 bars long. A sample written out solo is included in Tenor Sax 1 and Trombone 2, for those who are less confident at improvising. The main blues returns with a bit more pizazz before ending on the fanfare like passage for the whole band.

Duration: 2'10 to 4' depending on number of solos.

This arrangement was inspired by Toots Thielemans' recording The Brazil Project and was then written for a 1994 Concert Tour of Belgium by the US Army Jazz Ambassadors. A highlight of the tour was a finale concert in which Toots joined the band for this tune! This new setting was later recorded by the USAF Airmen of Note on their album ¡TIEMPO LATINO! and featured Paige Wrobel (vocal soloist), Andy Axelrad (flute), and Tim Leahey (flügelhorn).  Soprano Saxophone section lead; Trumpet 1 to F6 (written).

Rhapsody In Blue is considered an American musical masterpiece.  Written by George Gershwin in 1924, right from it’s opening notes it conjures up The Jazz Age, The American Scene, New York City, and as Gershwin himself described, national pep. The Tag Blues is a theme from RIB that is used as connective tissue throughout the piece. It is most famously stated in the bass clarinet.  It is know as the the Good Evening Friends theme.  In this arrangement, it is lifted from RIB and presented as a stand-alone blues tune.  There is a solo for piano and tenor sax, but any member of the band could step in and solo on its simple blues changes.  Difficulty level is intermediate and certainly playable by most high school jazz ensembles.  Lead Tpt G5.

A fast-paced 12-bar Blues that challenges the saxophones and should fun for the entire group.   The piece includes a solo section that canbe opened up fro several players.  The solo sectin includes a background riff that is introduced in the trombones, then repeated with the trumpets answering the trombones.  1st Trumpet range is mainly around B above the staff; however, the shout section takes the 1st trumpet up to C#.  The 1st Trombone has a few G's above the staff and a couple A's in the shout section.  Watch for the complete arrangement to be on YouTube soon.
