By Justin Hurwitz. By Justin Hurwitz. Arranged by Ryan Hudson. Jazz,Rock. 21 pages. Ryan Hudson #1065742. Published by Ryan Hudson (A0.1488887).

'Welcome' is a fantastically unique composition that accompanies the opening party scene from the film 'Babylon'. Born in the mind of composer Justin Hurwitz (composer of La La Land, Whiplash and First Man) he set out to create a soundtrack inspired by both rock and jazz. By using the instrumentation of jazz bands of the late 1920's and techniques found in rock songs of the early 80's - his work culminated to produce music that could only be described as 'riff-based jazz'. This arrangement aims to capture the essence of the composition 'Welcome' with punchy, in-your-face tutti sections and crazy melodic motifs; this piece will undeniably excite listeners and get the audience dancing.

Composed by Bud Caputo. Instructional,Jazz,Rock. Score and parts. 56 pages. Bud Caputo #3686729. Published by Bud Caputo (A0.826667).

Thank Hank is Rock 70’s arrangement similar to what I experienced under the direction of Hank Levy while a grad student at Catholic University in Washington, D. C. It offers students an opportunity to explore the odd meters he commonly used to formulate many of his works, only on an easier level for advanced middle school and high school players. Audiences will also enjoy this diversion from the typical meters used in most jazz arrangements. Although scored for full jazz ensemble, the arrangement will work for smaller groups that do not have the full instrumentation.

Auxiliary cow bell and tambourine parts will add to the flavor that was so commonly used during this era of pop music. Try to get the70’s flavor by using as close to an organ sound as possible, but a piano may be substituted. . There is 36 measure improvisation section that uses three chords, one for every 12 measures, and jazz scales are included in all the wind parts to encourage students to improvise.

Composed by Mike Strand. Graduation,Jazz,Wedding. Score and parts. 22 pages. Michael M. Strand #4890111. Published by Michael M. Strand (A0.970736).

By Mike Strand, ASCAP

This is the full score, plus scores for three groups of parts, for a full arrangement of a swing tune for piano, bass, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and two singers.

After the cover, there are 21 pages of music: Ten pages for the full score; four pages for the group of blowing instruments (alto saxophone, B flat trumpet, and trombone); four pages for the piano and bass; and three pages for the two singers.

Grouping the parts in this manner is natural and advantageous for this particular swing composition. These part groupings will help players in a group coordinate with each other from their group score. This is an excellent compromise between everyone working from the full score, and each player having a score with just the player’s individual part.

The audio sample plays the full score.

This product solves a problem that any composer of new jazz music faces: Unlike the popular standards, there aren’t any well-known and often-heard arrangements for a band to emulate. As the composer with only a lead sheet, I would have to convince your band to develop an arrangement from scratch, starting from nothing but the lead sheet!  With so many attractive standard swing tunes to perform, a busy band may hesitate to put extra effort into an unknown tune.

Problem solved!

With this full arrangement of They Came Here to Dance, a band can better see and hear the tune’s full potential. It will be easier for a band to make any modifications to suit its particular mix of musicians and to better fit its style.

With this arrangement, with written score, part group scores and audio sample, it will be as easy as working from the recording and score of a popular standard.

All that’s missing from this arrangement is the percussion, because of the individuality of drummers. The band only needs a skilled jazz drummer to join in easily with this arrangement.

Here are the lyrics to They Came Here to Dance:

1.

You may come here to eat and to drink.

Lots of chins wag, and wine glasses clink.

Well, that’s all good, but here’s what I think:

They came here to dance!

2.

We cats up front have to check our sound mix.

Then they walk in, togged to the bricks.

They have the moves to show off our licks.

They came here to dance!

Bridge – Instrumental section, followed by:

Our band’s in the groove – here’s one reason why:

The doghouse amps are turned up high.

They get in there, and tear up the floor!

And they don’t care if their feet get sore.

3.

Bustin’ our conks, we cats are hot,

She is a wren who rocks him a lot!

And they don’t care if we light up or not.

They came here to dance!

4. Bridge again, then:

Bustin’ our conks, we cats are hot,

She is a wren who rocks him a lot!

And they don’t care if we light up or not.

They have the learning to, they have a yearning to,

They came here to dance!

Note

Some words in these lyrics are taken from Cab Calloway Slang:

Light up – smoke a stick (marijuana cigarette)

Doghouse - bass

Get in there - go to work, get busy, make it hot, give it all you got

Bustin’ our conks – breaking our necks (applying ourselves diligently)

Wren – a chick, a queen (beautiful girl)

Cat – musician in swing band

Togged to the bricks – dressed to kill, from head to toe

Licks – hot musical phrases

In the groove – perfect, down the alley

 .

Composed by Roger Aldridge. CSIC Library Series. Contemporary,Jazz,Rock. Score and parts. 17 pages. Roger Aldridge #1989671. Published by Roger Aldridge (A0.979671).

Baltimore Rowhouse (for jazz soloist, 5 wind instruments, and rhythm section) is an extended piece with dramatic changes in mood and style. It begins as a ballad featuring alto sax, suddenly shifts to rock-fusion guitar, and finally has a film noir flavor. Serial techniques are used in subtle ways throughout the score and provide compositional structure. The piece strikes a balance between notation and improvisational freedom for both the soloists and the ensemble musicians. The score was originally conceived for woodwind quintet (with alto flute). Alternate parts are provided for an assortment of commonly-used wind instruments. In this way, the piece can be performed by many combinations of instruments. As another possibility, two (or more) musicians can be used on each wind instrument part. This option of having doubled parts -- with either same or different instruments on a part -- is an easy way for larger ensembles to perform this music.

LAST NIGHT - arranged for pep band, basketball band, jazz combo, small jazz ensemble
__________________________

Great for pre/post-game, 60-second timeouts, or a quick half-time number, LAST NIGHT climbed to #3 on the Billboard Chart in 1961. An easy blend of R&B and rock, this tune is insanely easy (hence the low price), using only 3 different notes! You can make it even more fun by adding easy choreography for the winds - start with bells down, slowly rise during the crescendo, then alternate bells left, then right for each repeated measure.

This 54-second arrangement has an easy key and the well-marked rehearsal numbers reduce the amount of time needed in rehearsal.

Parts are formatted to fit in a flip-folder, but print on letter-sized paper if you prefer to use 3-ring binders.

_______________________

The highly-flexible BcP-Flex scoring imitates the classic rock band sound by using only 4 instruments/voices - lead, rhythm, bass, and drums:
Lead: Flute, Clarinets, Alto Sax, Trumpets (note: for this piece, everyone except bass line has a unison lead/rhythm part)
Rhythm: Trombone, Horn, TC Baritone, Tenor Sax (note: for this piece, everyone except bass line has a unison lead/rhythm part)
Bass: Electric Bass, Tuba, Bari Sax
Drums: This arrangement includes a written drum set part, but it is often easier to get the drummer to pick-up the tune by listening to the chart.
