Jazz Ensemble Jazz Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1308790 Composed by Charles Tenet. Arranged by Tobi Crawford. Jazz. Set of parts. 10 pages. Tobi Crawford #898036. Published by Tobi Crawford (A0.1308790). *THIS ACCOMPANIES THE VOCAL ARRANGEMENT* This arrangement came to me over a number of weeks in a very organic way that began with the ostinato piano figure that prevails throughout the piece. I began playing it unattached to any tune and I just liked the way the line descended in the left hand and how I had to find voicings in the right hand that made harmonic sense – like a puzzle. As I was playing around with this puzzle, thoughts of my father were swirling around in my head – I was at the end of a 4 year period of separation from my parents owing to the fact that I’m a Canadian expat living in the US and the borders were closed for a long time because of Covid, and then I had work visa issues and my parents were getting older before my eyes. They were also losing friends to cancer and other ailments and my dad, in particular, had experienced the loss of many close family members and friends during our separation and it was taking a toll. One day I sat down and played the now familiar-to-me ostinato but randomly I started to sing “Beyond the Sea†over it and it fit perfectly. I thought it a happy coincidence. As the days went on I committed to putting my ostinato with Beyond the Sea and the lyrics started to seep into my brain. I have, of course, heard these lyrics many times before, (who hasn’t seen Finding Nemo?) but the lyrics didn’t mean what I thought they meant… They’re NOT about the ocean, they are about my dad!!! Well, kind of… I realized, through careful reflection and by slowing the words down, that the lyrics are talking about a person in heaven who is patiently waiting for their partner to join them. Somewhere beyond the seaShe’s there watching for me…It’s far beyond the starsIt’s near beyond the moon And the lyrics end with them meeting, “We’ll meet beyond the shore, we’ll kiss just like before,†and the song ends with: “and never again I’ll go sailing.†It’s like the big bang went off in my head about why all these thoughts of my dad, and his friends, and this arrangement, and what it all meant suddenly just MADE SENSE and I was able to start formulating a plan. Performance Suggestions: The improvisation solo in the middle should be free of any traditional “scat syllables†and should be more of a lament. Listen to singers like Aubrey Johnson improvise on ballads for inspiration. An idea for that improv section might be to have a male singer start the improv, then a female singer joins (as if together in heaven) then they sing letter F together (warning: will cause tears…). All solo sections do not have to be sung as written – soloists can take liberties with the melody as the spirit moves.

Jazz Ensemble Jazz Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1472109 By The Beatles. By John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Arranged by Mike Dana. Jazz,Latin,Pop. 66 pages. Mike Dana Music #1049808. Published by Mike Dana Music (A0.1472109). About the piece: Welcome to the second chart I’ve done on a Beatles tune! I guess, because the first one (Can’t Buy Me Love) went so well, I had to keep it going ? (shameless plug alert: CBML is available from both sheetmusicdirect.com and sheetmusicplus.com.) And I Love Her is a great tune, and I tried to find some creative ways to expand on that. It features your most lyrical flugel player, and you’ll need woodwind doubles: 2 flutes, 2 clarinets, and bass clarinet.  Ensemble: This is pretty straightforward: even 8th, bossa-ish vibe. Trumpets 1, 3, and 4 are on flugels full-time, except for the harmon trumpet bit in mm. 70-75. I feel the 5/4 bars as 2+3, and would conduct accordingly. Overall, think mellow, understated, warm/fuzzy on this.  Rhythm Section: I really hear nylon string guitar on this, so please ask your guitarist to bring the extra axe. ?  Piano, guitar, and bass: If there’s a notated paty without chord symbols, please play as written. If it’s chord symbols only, play/comp tastefully, as always. If there are both, you can do either. If the written part supports the ensemble, I’d suggest going that route. I LOVE having guitar and vibes in the rhythm section, but in general I’m not a big fan of having them play off of the same part. So, please observe the “play only if no guitar (or vibes etc.) indications. Drums, I’ve indicated some basic grooves (note the feel change in the bridge) but I trust you. Just keep things tasty and understated. Solo Section: Flugel solo…after the first read-through, you’ll know when it’s just you on the melody, and when your part is doubled. Feel free to play more expressively on the former. There are some short snippets of changes mixed in with the melodic statements; think of these more like fills than the official “solo section” which is mm. 50-80, the AAB of the form. Don’t swing for the fences in spots like mm. 44-48; instead, float on top of the ensemble sound. And, keep things simple from n. 91 out. ? As of this writing, I don’t have a recording of this, other than the MIDI demo. If you end up with a nice recording and would be OK sharing that with me, please reach out!

Jazz Ensemble Jazz Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.970736 Composed by Mike Strand. Graduation,Jazz,Wedding. Score and parts. 22 pages. Michael M. Strand #4890111. Published by Michael M. Strand (A0.970736). By Mike Strand, ASCAPThis is the full score, plus scores for three groups of parts, for a full arrangement of a swing tune for piano, bass, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and two singers. After the cover, there are 21 pages of music: Ten pages for the full score; four pages for the group of blowing instruments (alto saxophone, B flat trumpet, and trombone); four pages for the piano and bass; and three pages for the two singers.   Grouping the parts in this manner is natural and advantageous for this particular swing composition. These part groupings will help players in a group coordinate with each other from their group score. This is an excellent compromise between everyone working from the full score, and each player having a score with just the player’s individual part. The audio sample plays the full score. This product solves a problem that any composer of new jazz music faces: Unlike the popular standards, there aren’t any well-known and often-heard arrangements for a band to emulate. As the composer with only a lead sheet, I would have to convince your band to develop an arrangement from scratch, starting from nothing but the lead sheet!  With so many attractive standard swing tunes to perform, a busy band may hesitate to put extra effort into an unknown tune. Problem solved! With this full arrangement of They Came Here to Dance, a band can better see and hear the tune’s full potential. It will be easier for a band to make any modifications to suit its particular mix of musicians and to better fit its style. With this arrangement, with written score, part group scores and audio sample, it will be as easy as working from the recording and score of a popular standard. All that’s missing from this arrangement is the percussion, because of the individuality of drummers. The band only needs a skilled jazz drummer to join in easily with this arrangement.  Here are the lyrics to They Came Here to Dance: 1.You may come here to eat and to drink.Lots of chins wag, and wine glasses clink. Well, that’s all good, but here’s what I think: They came here to dance! 2. We cats up front have to check our sound mix. Then they walk in, togged to the bricks. They have the moves to show off our licks. They came here to dance! Bridge – Instrumental section, followed by: Our band’s in the groove – here’s one reason why: The doghouse amps are turned up high. They get in there, and tear up the floor! And they don’t care if their feet get sore. 3. Bustin’ our conks, we cats are hot, She is a wren who rocks him a lot! And they don’t care if we light up or not. They came here to dance!4. Bridge again, then:Bustin’ our conks, we cats are hot, She is a wren who rocks him a lot! And they don’t care if we light up or not. They have the learning to, they have a yearning to,They came here to dance! Note Some words in these lyrics are taken from Cab Calloway Slang: Light up – smoke a stick (marijuana cigarette) Doghouse - bass Get in there - go to work, get busy, make it hot, give it all you got Bustin’ our conks – breaking our necks (applying ourselves diligently) Wren – a chick, a queen (beautiful girl) Cat – musician in swing band Togged to the bricks – dressed to kill, from head to toe Licks – hot musical phrases In the groove – perfect, down the alley  .

Jazz Ensemble Jazz Ensemble - Digital Download SKU: A0.977365 Composed by Frank Loesser. Arranged by Des McNutty. Contemporary. Score and parts. 61 pages. Des Press #6888385. Published by Des Press (A0.977365). If I Were a Bell is a song from the 1950 musical Guys and Dolls, based on Damon Runyan stories from Broadway in the prohibition era. Sky, the thirsty gambler, takes straight-laced Salvationist Sarah to Havana for a bet. They drink a local milkshake with sugar and a little native flavouringSarah: What's the name of the flavouring?Sky: Bacardi.Sarah: Doesn't Bacardi have alcohol in it?Sky: Oh, only enough to act as a preservative.Sarah: You know, this would be a wonderful way to get children to drink milk! After a couple of those, she bursts into song. Doris Day had a Top-20 hit with If I Were a Bell in 1950 and many singers have covered it since. Its place as a Jazz Standard was cemented in 1956 on the album Relaxin' with The Miles Davis Quintet. This original arrangement for big band features a solo flute - if not a flute solo - and, at 128 BPM, is slightly slower than usual. It was written in the mid-1990s for the Morley College Jazz Orchestra in London (then directed by Gordon BAP! Rose and Pete Pearl and Dean Moore). The style is in the direction of the understated West-Coast sound (Count Basie/Bill Russo/Bill Holman), with tipsy soli sections and a shout-chorus. The part for second alto OR first tenor is the same, meaning the flautist can be either an alto or tenor player. Well, if I were a salad I know I'd be splashing my dressing.Hic!

Published by George Willson (A0.1242126). With all the bird titles floating around out there from Birdland, Lullaby of Birdland, Yardbird, Foo Birds, Free Bird, and even The Chicken, I figured what with my being from Broken Arrow (the home of the annual Rooster Days festival), it was high time there was a song involving the rooster. Called Night of the Rooster, this was a cross between the Stray Cat Strut and James Bond, and one can only imagine the rooster's evening in the hen house. Without going into innuendos, the way the T-Town Jazz Band performed it was with all trombone improv solos ending with all four of us playing at once. Whether this was measuring slide lengths or a battle between roosters, you can let your imagination run wild. It boiled down to a fun ltitle blues piece that wasn't too difficult to get into in any case, and we even have the recording linked to prove it.George Willson has been an performer, composer, and conductor for thirty years in various mediums and ensembles.MP3 rendition is an extract of the composition program.

Jazz Ensemble Jazz Ensemble - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1504237 Composed by Joe Darion and Mitch Leigh. Arranged by John Ivor Holland. 20th Century,Broadway,Film/TV,Musical/Show,Pop. 29 pages. John Ivor Holland #1079695. Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1504237). Man of La Mancha is a 1965 musical with a book by Dale Wasserman, music by Mitch Leigh, and lyrics by Joe Darion. It is adapted from Wasserman's non-musical 1959 teleplay I, Don Quixote, which was in turn inspired by Miguel de Cervantes and his 17th-century novel 'Don Quixote'. It tells the story of the 'mad' knight Don Quixote as a play within a play, performed by Cervantes and his fellow prisoners as he awaits a hearing with the Spanish Inquisition. The work is not and does not pretend to be a faithful rendition of either Cervantes' life or Don Quixote (Wasserman complained repeatedly about people taking the work as a musical version of Don Quixote). The original Broadway production ran for 2,328 performances and won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical; it has been revived four times on Broadway and there have been mulitple productions in different laguages around the world, becoming one of the most enduring works of musical theatre; it was adapted into a movie in 1972, starring Peter O'Toole. The Impossible Dream is one of the enduring musical themes throughout the show and has also been performed by many diverse artists over the decades, including Frank Sinatra, Shirley Bassey, Tom Jones and Aretha Franklin.

Score and parts. 51 pages. Deaver Enterprises ASCAP #584508. Published by Deaver Enterprises ASCAP (A0.978842). Somewhere Along The Way Producer John Hammond specifically asked me for this arrangement because he believed, and rightfully so, that Bill’s appeal to the general public would be American popular song ballad features highlighting his phenomenal dynamic range. I’m sure he had Nat “King†Cole’s hit in mind and the chart pretty much wrote itself. This is the original arrangement from the original score with all of the flute parts included which were cut, for whatever reason, from the final mix. Bucket muted trumpets can be substituted for Flugels and I’ve added a hard ending instead of a board fade for performance purposes. The original recording version can be replicated... just tacit the flutes where necessary or if you’re ambitious, transpose the flutes for saxes and/or clarinets.

Jazz Ensemble Jazz Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.746167 By The Clash. By Joe Strummer and Mick Jones. Arranged by Michael Pilley. Jazz. Score and parts. 51 pages. Michael Pilley Music #3535709. Published by Michael Pilley Music (A0.746167). Written specifically for Swing Punks, the amazing London big band who play punk tunes in a jazz style, this vocal arrangement has all the bells and whistles. Starting in a bluesy swing style, see if you can pick up all the quotes as you progress through the chart. When it kicks into double time, it'll get your audiences toes tapping just enough for you to snap them back to a languid blues atmosphere. With an open solo section this chart comes alive, allowing for soloists to take the tune where they want to. Double time ensues after that, with a big ending to finish this cracking chart.THE SONGReleased in 1981, Should I Stay became The Clash's only UK number 1 single, albeit 10 years after in a reissued single. It made 228 in Rolling Stones Top 500 and features Spanish backing vocals, in a strange twist.THE BANDSwing Punks (www.swingpunks.com) are an exciting big band based in London, UK who take the best punk music and turn it into swinging big band music. Featuring 3 vocalists and a full complement of horns, their shows are full of energy and pizzazz. I've been lucky enough to play with them a few times since moving closer to London, and I always enjoy mixing it up with such great musicians.PRINTING TIPSBeautifully laid out, the score and parts are easy to read and available NOW for digital download.
