I arranged it for my St. George Jazz Ensemble and it has added a new flavor to our concert repertoire. It is an interesting piece to practice imprivising, given the changes in mode, and it has been fun for the band to perfrom. The cover art was concieved and arranged by Madison Arvoy.

Gene Wilder’s 1971 performance of this song in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory won the hearts of boys and girls dreaming of endless worlds of candy and fantasy. Gerhard Guter’s swinging jazz waltz rendition for big band with solo alto or bass vocalist breathes new life into this beloved tune. The introduction sets up a repeating harmonic pattern, which returns at various points during the arrangement, which gradually picks up steam and swing, unfolding in a lush cadence as the vocalist launches into the poignant lyric. Saxophone writing draws upon the usage of trills, across-the-barline quadruplets, and harmonized flourishes. Unison piano and (optional) vibraphone parts will bring to mind the musical code for entering Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Room. The orchestration benefits from a variety of dynamic shadings and the use of bucket mutes for the trombones and cup mutes for the trumpets. Dramatic moments are emphasized with mallets. Where its name comes from is the unusual acoustic properties that one experiences when standing on top of that broken pavement. Those outside the circle can't hear what the person is saying, and when speaking, the person in the circle can hear their voice echoed back to them. Scientifically, it is said to be its unique position in relation to the nearby buildings of downtown, but even so, it has become a strange tourist attraction. To exemplify these strange acoustic properties, this big band piece is written in an unusual time signature for the blues: 5/4. That, in itself, makes it inherently difficult to play since most jazz musicians are tuned into 4/4 with the occasional 3/4 or 12/8 thrown in for variety.
