The five canons are contrasting in mood, from the juvenile Dinosaur, to the upbeat Come play, to the serious and idealistic statement of Le rêve, to the sinister Le corbeau, to the peacefully contented Afternoon on a Hill.

Owing to their intended audience, all of these canons are at the unison/octave. Three of them (2, 3, and 5) are two-part echo-canons, where the imitative voices begins very soon after the first one (two beats later in each case here).

The other two canons, based on pre-existing texts, adopt the more common structure of following a chord progression that proceeds over several measures (albeit an irregular, 7-measure, elided phrase in Le Rêve).

The lyrics of The Turtle and the Flamingo are based on a poem written by James T. Fields (1817-1881). The humorous story of a young turtle who falls in love with, and is rejected by, a “blazingly beauteous� flamingo is one that both singers and audiences will find enjoyable. Fields penned a more serious ending for the love-sick turtle, but the composers couldn’t bear to add it to this song for children’s choirs. They have instead chosen to end their song with a verse allowing the lively turtle to live and love another day.

Come, ye thankful people, come was inspired by the Anglican choral style of David Willcocks and other English church composers. This is evident starting in the two introductory measures, which grow from a single note and immediately introduce the tune. The introductory harmonic language is reused throughout the first verse, which closes with a solo flute soaring above the final note. The solo flute continues its melody in tandem with the tune in the second verse. The third verse features a tenor melody on an English tuba stop while the upper accompanimental voices explore their own melody. After a brief transition to full organ, the final verse features the upper voices in a soaring descant, capitulating on an ascending scale to a high F.

The text foreshadows the message of the advent season (Lord, quickly come… with all thine angels) while the harmonic and musical drama with the descant paint the text and foreshadow the musical jubilation of Christmas. As an anthem, this setting is quick for a choir of any size to learn, while as a concertato it allows the music director, organist, or even pianist the flexibility to greatly enhance congregational song.
