A collection of five canons for children or amateur adult choir:

1.   Afternoon on a Hill  (Edna St. Vincent Millay)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiUMt21kgv8

2.   Le corbeau (lyrics by the composer)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLnJ03uyqZQ

3.   Once, a Dinosaur Jumped in my Bath (lyrics by the composer)

4.   Le rêve  (Émile Zola)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbL3bUhClLk

5.   Come Play (lyrics by the composer)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8W_U662MB6c

The five canons are contrasting in mood, from the juvenile Dinosaur, to the upbeat Come play, to the serious and idealistic statement of Le rêve, to the sinister Le corbeau, to the peacefully contented Afternoon on a Hill.

Owing to their intended audience, all of these canons are at the unison/octave. Three of them (2, 3, and 5) are two-part echo-canons, where the imitative voices begins very soon after the first one (two beats later in each case here).

The other two canons, based on pre-existing texts, adopt the more common structure of following a chord progression that proceeds over several measures (albeit an irregular, 7-measure, elided phrase in Le Rêve).

Composed by Sally Whitwell. Children,Classical,Contemporary,Instructional. Octavo. 12 pages. Sally Whitwell #689742. Published by Sally Whitwell (A0.1085573).

There are a great many songs about birds. Lovely birds. Birds who soar gracefully through the air, who sing us beautiful songs, who nurture their young in nests high in the treetops. There are fewer songs about other kinds of birds like; 1. The Cassowary. Unofficially the most dangerous bird in the world, with its long, sharp, dinosaur-like talons. Also its weird crest and strange turkey-like under-the-chin wibbly-wobbliness. What the...? 2. The Fairy Penguin. This is a bird who can’t fly at all! And it nests not in a treetop, but in a burrow underground. Huh? 3. The Cockatoo. Ok, yes, the cockatoo can soar majestically through the sky, but its song? So ugly. So with The Little Aviary I am merely attempting to redress the balance. Let’s hear it for all the birds, even the weird ones.
