This stirring anthem based on Psalm 122 sounds difficult but is easier than it sounds. Children's voices imitate the adult sopranos in the opening and closing sections in a quasi Renaissance style supported by large blocked chords played by handbells and organ. The more elaborate middle section is sung primarily by the adult choir and features interesting rhythmic inflections and colorful key relationships.

This musical is an outgrowth of our experience and involvement in the Senior Adult and Children's ministry of our church. We discovered the magic of combining youth and age, and were inspired by their special ability to understand and communicate with each other. For the purpose of this musical, we will be using the broad term Junior Choir instead of children. As you rehearse and perform Side By Side, our prayer is that you will be reminded that Jesus reached out continuously to people unlike himself and has commanded us to do the same. The authors are grateful for the spiritual insight these two groups have given us, and for their showing us the meaning of these two passages from the Psalms: Children are a gift from God: they are his reward (Psalm 127:3); The virtuous ... will flourish in the courts of our God, still bearing fruit in old age, still remaining fresh and green, to proclaim that Yahweh is righteous (Psalm 92: 13-15).

This charming musical combines an old Christmas folk story with new music that reminds us of the true meaning of giving. The musical tells the story of a church that had the most amazing chime of bells in its great ivory tower. According to a legend, on Christmas Eve, all the townspeople would bring gifts for the Christ Child. When a very special gift had been given, the chimes would ring sending forth the sweetest sound anyone had ever heard. Unfortunately, the bells had been silent for many years. Things began to change, however, when a young girl named Sara and her little brother journey to the church hoping to hear the chimes ring. Appropriate for children's choirs plus the addition of youth and/or adult if desired. Numerous non-singing roles also allow for maximum participation. Performance time: approximately 30 minutes.
