This sultry, sad song was one of Les Brown's greatest hits.  Repeats are optional, but are recommended when using other instruments.  The key change halfway through adds spice to this rendition.  This arrangement for six-octave handbell choir catches all the flavor and nuance of the original, and can be successfully played by the advanced handbell musicians as it is.  If you wish, you may add flute and/or voice to the piece; a full score of all the instruments is also available.  The price quoted allows for one copy of the voice part.

This marvelous 1941 song was originally recorded as a big band/swing tune by Glenn Miller and His Orchestra and featured in the 1941 movie Sun ValleySerenade.  It was the first song to receive a gold record, presented by RCA Victor in 1942, for sales of 1.2 million copies.  The song was an extended production number, and became the No. 1 song across the United States on December 7, 1941, and remained at No. 1 for nine weeks on the Billboard Best Sellers chart.  It opens up with the band, sounding like a train rolling out of the station, complete with the trumpets and trombones imitating a train whistle, before the instrumental portion comes in playing two parts of the main melody.  This is followed by the vocal introduction of four lines before the main part of the song is heard.  The main song opens with a dialog between a passenger and a shoeshine boy.  The singer describes the train's route, originating from Pennsylvania Station in New York and running through Baltimore to North Carolina before reaching Chattanooga. He mentions a woman he knew from an earlier time in his life, who will be waiting for him at the station and with whom he plans to settle down for good. After the entire song is sung, the band plays two parts of the main melody as an instrumental, with the instruments imitating the WHOO WHOO of the train as the song ends.  This is a very intriguing adaptation, with or without voice.  The price indicated allows you to purchase one (1) copy of the vocal version.

This sultry ballad looks complicated on the page, but at the tempo indicated can be directed successfully with most 3- to 6-octave choirs; simply use the instruments you have at hand and ignore the rest.  At most times, the chimes double the voice but in other moments they compliment the singer.  The history of the song and its lyrics are discussed at the conclusion of the arrangement.  You may purchase one copy of this vocal part for the price listed.

The movie Star Spangled Rhythm featured many standard swing hits including this upbeat tune.  In the movie, it was a love duet sung very quickly between Mary Martin and Dick Powers, followed by an even lively African-American quartet trying to get the couple out of the bar and to their rooms so the place can be closed for the night.  In the intervening time, the tune has been re-established as a lullaby at a much slower tempo, which this arrangement replicates.  Here it is cast for a full 6-octave handbell choir, with or without voice, and has among other distinctions the unresolved closing chords.  This is a sure hit for ringers and audiences.  You may purchase 1 copy of this vocal arrangement for the price listed.
