In Chaucer's famous work, this unfortunate dupe recounted his misfortunes at the hands of the Canon, a.k.a, Alchemist, as well as the plight of one of the Alchemist's many swindled customers. The song is written for unison choir with a piano accompaniment. It also includes a short play at the end that dramatizes Chaucer's rendition of the Canon Yeoman's Tale. The play requires a minimum of six players and would be excellent as a skit for secondary students. The Canon Yeoman's Lament could conclude the play or, if given a brief verbal introduction, it could stand on its own as a humorous interjection highlighting the perils from swindlers, both past and present. This tongue-in-cheek song captures Chaucer's legendary humor for modern audiences!

Secondly, the highly repetitive motive of three notes at the opening helps give the opportunity to concentrate on the drama of the text so that the word is more important than a melody. It also makes for easy learning and memorization so that concentration can be part of the story. An excellent vehicle for clear enunciation, as in 'The Festival Alleluia'. This anthem could also very well be performed with a pantomime dramatization concurrent with the singing.

UPC: 749193003176.Brethren, We Have Met to Worship' is an arrangement of an American folk hymn with a pentatonic melody; the text is by George Atkins. Although quite within the realm of Junior-age choirs, the words would seem to indicate performance by high school or even adult singers. The first stanza, though in unison, could alternate men and women as long as the sturdiness of the tune is maintained. The second, in canon, has the boys posing questions with the girls answers overlapping. This section should be unusually animated so that the listener is swept along with the dialogue. The final stanza, unison with descant, probably would be best with first sopranos on the obbligato, all other voices on the tune. Having the lower women's voices join the men on the melody will fill in the extremes of the part writing and give more possibilities for the divisi in the last few measures. The composer has given some general registration suggestions for performance on the organ. Light, clear sounds should be used that will support the voices as well as emphasize the rhythmic nature of the piece.

If you do not know these pieces, consider them for your choirs, especially the younger elementary ages. Sing, O Sing is a very effective and joyous Easter anthem that may be sung either in unison or two-part (the two-part section is primarily a canon). Handbell accompaniment is preferable, but the piano may also be used to good effect. Sing this piece with great joy and abandon, and not too slow (note that the work is in '2').
